ISL 2024-25: Top 5 players who can win the Golden Ball this season

As the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign progresses into the business end of proceedings, some players have made a name for themselves. The performances of these players have made them the frontrunners for the prestigious Golden Ball award, an honour reserved for the league’s most outstanding performer.

These players have separated themselves from the rest with their goal-scoring prowess, playmaking skills, and consistency on the field. The following five players have stood out as top contenders and have played a key role in their clubs’ ISL playoff ambitions.  

Here are the top five players who will be in the running for one of the league’s most prestigious awards for individual brilliance:

5. Jamie Maclaren (Mohun Bagan Super Giants) – 10 Goals and 2 Assists

The 31-year-old striker has been the man for the Mariners on big occasions this season. Maclaren has been a vital asset for Mohun Bagan, which is looking to capture both the ISL Shield and the ISL championship.

In 20 appearances this season, the Australian forward scored 10 goals while contributing with two assists. His experience and ability to perform under pressure make him a key player as they look set to dominate in the ISL playoffs. A strong finish to the season with both the shield and the championship could elevate his chances of securing the coveted Golden Ball.

4. Jesús Jiménez (Kerala Blasters FC) – 11 Goals and 1 Assist

A key player for the Tuskers, the Spaniard has been providing the attacking boost for his side. With 11 goals in 17 matches and an assist, Jiménez has had a season to remember.

Despite playing significantly fewer games than some of his fellow attackers, the Spaniard has showcased his incredible efficiency and clinical finishing in front of goal. If he maintains his goal-scoring momentum this season, he will be one of the dark horses for the coveted award in his debut season.

3. Sunil Chhetri (Bengaluru FC) – 11 Goals and 2 Assists

At 40 years old, the Blues legendary captain continues to defy age and science, as he remains the only Indian in the hunt for the Golden Ball. Chhetri scored 11 goals in 20 games and provided two assists in yet another challenging season.

His leadership on the field and ability to deliver in crucial moments make him a serious contender. While the Blues have been wobbly this season, the 40-year-old will again be one of the leading lights to help them make a strong push towards the playoffs. The Indian icon’s influence on the Blues’ potential run in the ISL playoffs could further strengthen his chances of winning an award that celebrates individual brilliance.  

2. Diego Maurício (Odisha FC) – 9 Goals and 6 Assists

The Brazilian forward has again proven his class, accumulating 15 points this season. With nine goals and six assists in 21 matches, the 2022-23 Golden Boot-winning striker has been a crucial attacking force for Odisha FC.

His ability to create and finish chances makes him one of the most versatile forwards in the league. While he trails the next-best player by 10 points, a strong finish to the regular season and the ISL playoffs could tip the scales in his favour for the award.

1. Alaeddine Ajaraie (NorthEast United FC) – 20 Goals and 5 Assists 

The Moroccan forward has been the most dominant player in the league this season and is the leading favourite for the Golden Ball. The NorthEast United FC striker has netted 20 goals in 21 appearances, making him the most lethal goal scorer in the league. His record goal-scoring season also has seen him supply five assists for his teammates.

Ajaraie’s ability to find the back of the net with precision and consistency makes him an instrumental player in NorthEast United FC’s campaign. The all-action attacker will need to be on top form to achieve something in the ISL playoffs.
