The top flight of women’s professional football league, Indian Women’s League (IWL) in India is all set to kick off in less than a fortnight. Eight teams from different parts of the country will compete to become the Champions of India and represent India in the AFC Women’s Champions League.
Recently, the All India Football Federation and Capri Sports signed a landmark 15 year deal in Indian Women’s football to manage the commercial development, marketing, broadcast engagement, and growth of the Indian Women’s League (IWL) and IWL 2.
The tournament is set to kickoff on November 13 and the matches will be played across three venues in Bengaluru, Kolkata and Jamshedpur.
Apart from six teams from the last season, two new teams including HOPS (House of Power Soccer Football Club) and Juba Sangha FC from Delhi got promoted to the top tier from IWL 2.
IWL Matches will be streamed free on Youtube
All matches of the Indian Women’s League will be broadcasted live on Youtube free of cost. Erasing the paywall barrier to OTT Platforms is significantly expected to increase the viewership and expand the reach of the league across various parts of the country.
The top two divisions of men’s football in India are also streamed digitally on Youtube free of cost and this has resulted in an exponential spike in the viewership, pulling over millions of views.
Eight teams to compete for glory in IWL
East Bengal, the reigning champions of the Indian Women’s League will begin their title defence against Gokulam Kerala in Kalyani. The Moshal Girls have been the most dominating teams of the tournament in the last few editions and are representing India in the AFC Women’s Champions League.
Sethu, the Tamil Nadu franchise that hails from the temple city of Madurai, finished second last season and will be keen to go one step further to turn their silver into gold. They will be up against Kickstart FC in the opening matchweek.
The matches will be played across three phases in three different venues. The opening matchweek games until December 5th will take place in Kalyani Stadium, Kolkata whereas the Steel City of Jamshedpur will play host from December 10th to 29th December.
After the new year break, the IWL Caravan will move to it’s final destination in the Silicon Valley of India, Bengaluru from January 4th to January 23rd, 2027.
