East Bengal FC will have high hopes to become champions this season.

East Bengal are determined to compete strongly for the 2024-25 Indian Women’s League (IWL) title after having built up a formidable squad for the competition. The Torchbearers had an underwhelming 2023-24 campaign in the division, finishing in sixth place with only one win across 12 games.

Following that setback, the club’s management worked hard to add some really quality and experienced figures to the squad. One of their biggest moves was to rope in seasoned coach Anthony Andrews, who helped Gokulam Kerala win two IWL titles and had them finish as runners-up to Odisha FC in the previous campaign.

East Bengal paid a record transfer fee to acquire the services of Andrews and have also significantly backed him by improving their squad from last season. They roped in prominent India Women’s Team international Sandhiya Ranganathan from Gokulam Kerala, adding real firepower to their frontline by signing a player who scored 15 goals in 21 league games for her previous club.

The Red & Gold Brigade also improved their midfield line by signing another India internationally in Naorem Priyangka Devi, adding energy and aggression to their side. East Bengal are also blessed to have quality defenders in the form of experienced centre-backs Sweety Devi and Ashalata Devi, as well as explosive forward Anju Tamang to add more firepower to their frontline.

East Bengal were even able to improve their foreign core ahead of the IWL campaign by signing a clinical forward in Ghanaian forward Elshaddai Acheampong, who was the top scorer of the 2021-22 IWL campaign with 20 goals. Along with that, the Torchbearers were able to bring in Ugandan international Resty Nanziri, who has three international goals to her name.

They also added some experience and composure to their midfield line by signing Kenyan midfielder Maurine Achieng, creating a strong enough foreigner base to help them power through opponents in the IWL.
