The young defender not only scored a goal but was solid with his tackles.

Jose Molina’s Mohun Bagan won their first match of the 2024-25 Indian Super League campaign with a thrilling 3-2 win over NorthEast United at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday (September 23). The Mariners were able to produce a brilliant second-half comeback after being 2-1 down, with Subhasish Bose and Jason Cummings helping them get all three points.

On the other hand, the breakout centre-back Dippendu Biswas also scored his first goal in the ISL in the first half, producing a stellar header from Dimitri Petratos’ free-kick. The young defender produced another solid shift at the back, keeping Spanish forward Guillermo Fernandez quiet.

Dippendu Biswas earned some major praise from Mohun Bagan head coach Jose Molina after the game, with the Spaniard stating: “He’s going to be similar. I’m absolutely happy with Dippendu, he’s a great worker and a great team player.

Jose Molina’s takes on the game

“He’s working hard from the first day, improving every day. I’m sure he’ll be one of the best centre-backs in India, no doubt about that. If he can keep working and developing in the same way, I hope he can soon play for the national team,” Jose Molina also added.

Jose Molina is also confident that this win can be a momentum raiser for the Mariners’ squad and is confident that they are heading in the right way under him. Speaking about the need for patience and trust in his philosophy, the Spaniard stated: “I’m sure that we are going the right way. I’m also sure that we can still improve and get even better. I’m happy with the three points today and happy with my players for giving a great effort.

“We can still improve more in certain aspects. NorthEast United, for example, have been with their coach for a long way and everyone understands how to play under him. The same for Bengaluru and Mumbai, a lot of ISL teams have to play this season and know how to play under their coach’s system. A new coach takes time to adapt his style to the players. Everyone is trying to understand what I’m transmitting to them. We’re closer to our aim and I hope we can play better in the next matches,” Jose Molina also quipped.

Mohun Bagan will play their first away game of the 2024-25 ISL campaign when they face league leaders Bengaluru FC in their next match on 28 September.
