Minerva Punjab FC’s U-14 side are competing in the prestigious Helsinki Cup.

The Helsinki Cup is one of the most prestigious youth tournaments across Europe, having been held since 1976! The tournament is celebrating its 50th edition in 2025, and Indian football is proud enough to have one team in the Minerva Punjab FC academy players representing them in the tournament.

In the 2025 Helsinki Cup, 30,000 youth footballers are taking part. There are 1,806 teams participating in the tournament, which will also have over 5,700 matches across 100 different fields in Finland. The Helsinki Cup has gained more popularity over the decades, with only 211 teams participating in the first edition in 1976 before it amped up to thousands in the current era.

India’s Minerva Punjab FC to compete in Helsinki Cup

The Helsinki Cup is considered a premier youth football tournament that attracts youth teams from all over the globe. When it comes to India, Minerva Punjab FC are the only team to have their youth team participating in it.

The former I-League champions have a renowned youth football system whose academy graduates include current India football team regulars like Manvir Singh and Anwar Ali, so it’s not surprising that Minerva Punjab have been impressing at the 2025 Helsinki Cup.

There are over 5,700 matches to be played at the Helsinki Cup, with the final being held between the two very best teams on July 12 (2025). However, Minerva Punjab FC will be playing five matches in the group matches after being pitted into the same group as some teams from Finland and Iceland!

Minerva Punjab FC’s run in Helsinki Cup

Minerva Punjab started their Helsinki Cup campaign in a rather dominant fashion as they faced off against Finland’s most decorated club, HJK Helsinki’s academy team. However, the Shers showed no signs of fear as they produced an emphatic performance against the Finland giants.

Minerva Punjab produced a clinical attacking display to pick up a 5-0 win over Helsinki, romping their way to a huge win thanks to a brace from forward Chetan Tiwari. In doing so, they began the group stages in utterly dominant fashion and were able to get the necessary momentum to prove their quality.

7-0 win over Finnish club LoPa’s youth side

The Indian side went on to face Finnish club LoPa’s youth side in their second group game. They produced another attacking masterclass in this one to totally humiliate their opponents.

Minerva Punjab picked up a 7-0 win over their opponents, putting them to the sword with a brilliant performance in which their striker Wahengbam Raj Singh scored a hat-trick as well!

In doing so, Minerva Punjab FC were also able to finish the first day of the group matches on top of their group. The Indian side was able to maintain their dominance in the second day of the group stages, when they faced off against Iceland club KR Reykjavík’s youth team.

The Indians flexed their muscles with an amazing attacking display that totally bamboozled their opponents. Minerva Punjab FC picked up a huge 9-0 win against the Iceland-based side, with Raj scoring six goals in the game!

In doing so, the Shers have been able to keep their place on top of their group, with two more group games remaining.

Minerva Punjab FC will be facing the Finnish side UMF Afturelding in their next group game. In their final group match, they will face RCDE\HPS Azzurro, which is the joint team of La Liga side Espanyol and Helsinki FC.

Minerva Punjab will move forward into the knockout stages as long as able to secure a top-4 finish, but will be gunning for the top spot to move into the next rounds in style.
