Football’s popularity in India has also been greatly aided by their devoted following, which is renowned for their steadfast support. The club’s past also influenced India’s struggle for independence.
This feature article explores the remarkable path of Mohun Bagan, detailing their important victories, awards, and influence on Indian football.
The Golden era of the Green and Maroons – 1960s
In 1960, Mohun Bagan achieved a trifecta, winning the Durand Cup, IFA Shield and CFL crowns with only one loss in 42 games across all three competitions. They were asked to play exhibition matches in East Africa, visiting Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Zanzibar, and Tanganyika, as a result of their dominant performance.
The Shield was successively won by Mohun Bagan in 1961 and 1962. Arun Sinha, the team’s coach, replaced the outdated 2–3–5 structure with a 3-defenders system when Dhiren Dey brought back a severe regime. It was mostly Arun Sinha’s responsibility to raise linchpins like Chuni Goswami and Jarnail Singh.
Mohun Bagan only took home two titles, the Rover’s Cup in 1968 and the Shield in 1967. After Chuni Goswami retired in 1968, the team hired Amal Dutta, a young and eccentric coach who was also India’s first professional coach. Dutta introduced the idea of overlapping full-backs to Indian football. Implementing the new plan, Mohun Bagan produced incredible football and won the CFL and IFA Shield, defeating East Bengal 3-1 in the Shield final.
