Three Mohun Bagan players who can benefit from Lee Erwin's signing

The Mariners bolster their attack with this signing.

Mohun Bagan have decided to sign a new centre-forward in the form of Lee Erwin as their sixth foreigner of the 2026 summer transfer window, bolstering their frontline before the beginning of the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL).

The 32-year-old Scottish forward will arrive at the Kolkata club with a wealth of experience behind him, having made well over 350 appearances in his career and played at a number of notable clubs around the globe.

Erwin spent the 2025-26 season playing for Jordan club Al-Faisaly SC, scoring six goals for them in the Jordanian Pro League as well. He is a natural centre-forward who excels in and around the opposition penalty area and is going to be someone who will be expected to add more goals to the Mohun Bagan attack going forward in their tryst to reclaim their ISL title in this campaign.

The 32-year-old’s arrival should also be having a positive impact on a number of his new teammates at Mohun Bagan. Because of the kind of clinical goal-scorer that he is, Erwin would not only add more unpredictability to the Mariners’ attack but also be a positive influence for a few key attacking players in the squad.

Here, we look at the three Mohun Bagan players who can possibly benefit from Lee Erwin’s signing.

3. Jamie Maclaren

Even though Mohun Bagan has signed Erwin to be a competitor for Jamie Maclaren’s position in that No. 9 role for the Mariners, the Australian forward can actually be a beneficiary of the signing.

The fact that he will not have more competition in that centre-forward position means that the Australian forward will be motivated to keep improving his performances and look to give his 100% for Mohun Bagan to be able to preserve his starting position in Panagiotis Dilmperis’ XI.

Maclaren will probably enjoy the competition with Erwin in that Mohun Bagan centre-forward, as the Aussie forward – who scored 10 goals in the ISL last season – will be kept on his toes and be under pressure to consistently score goals or risk losing his spot to the Scotsman.

Moreover, the arrival of Erwin also means that Maclaren won’t be overburdened with goal-scoring responsibilities at Mohun Bagan – because the 32-year-old striker will also be assuming some of that pressure going forward. That can allow Maclaren to play more of his natural game and excel up front for the Mariners.

2. Sahal Abdul Samad

Sahal Abdul Samad of Mohun Bagan Super Giants arrive on the ground for the start of during the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 season, match 111 played between Kerala Blaster FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giants held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi on March 13, 2024.

Sahal Abdul Samad was definitely one of the best players for Mohun Bagan in their 2026 Durand Cup campaign, proving himself as a valuable asset in Panagiotis Dilmperis’ system. The Indian midfielder appears to be a pretty good fit for the Greek coach’s style and will probably play an important squad role for the Mariners in their 2026-27 ISL campaign as well.

Sahal should also be able to benefit from having a refreshing new presence up front in the form of Lee Erwin, who is definitely not just about scoring goals. Indeed, the 32-year-old striker is also really good when it comes to his link-up play and dropping into unpredictable positions to be able to set up chances for others.

In the matches where he’s playing with Erwin, Samad can create this intuitive link with him to ensure that he gets smart service from the Scottish forward in & around the penalty area. Erwin can be key in freeing up more space for Sahal inside the opposition box so that the Indian midfielder can make more of his forward runs and look to score more goals for Mohun Bagan going forward.

Sahal would also look to use his creative prowess to help set up more chances for Erwin, and having the proactive Scottish forward can be beneficial for Sahal.

1. Miguel Figueira

Three things Miguel Figueira must improve to become Mohun Bagan's driving force in the 2026-27 ISL title charge

Miguel Figueira definitely has a lot to prove in his first season at Mohun Bagan, especially after a stuttering start in their Durand Cup campaign. After inspiring East Bengal towards winning the 2025-26 ISL title, Figueira is now being tasked with doing the same by getting Mohun Bagan back to the top of the Indian football ladder. Fortunately for the Brazilian midfielder, he now has a new clinical forward to work with in the Mohun Bagan attack.

Figueira realises that Erwin is a really proactive figure inside the opposition box, being able to slip his way past the defenders’ marking and get to the end of crosses really well.

Hence, that should have a positive impact on Miguel – who will look to nail his final third passes and crosses into the box to feed the 32-year-old striker in the key goal-scoring areas.

Figueira will look to form a solid chemistry with Erwin, forming an intuitive link with him and ensuring he repeatedly plays inviting passes to him inside the penalty area to notch more assists for Mohun Bagan.

Who is Mohun Bagan’s latest foreign signing?

Mohun Bagan have signed Scottish centre-forward Lee Erwin as their sixth foreign player ahead of the 2026-27 ISL season.

How can Lee Erwin benefit Jamie Maclaren?

Erwin’s arrival will provide healthy competition for the No. 9 position while also reducing the goal-scoring burden on Maclaren. The Australian will have to maintain consistent performances to retain his starting spot.
