Mohun Bagan's top five goal scorers in Asian competitions

Mohun Bagan will play Ahal FK on September 16.

Mohun Bagan are ready to represent India in the 2025-26 AFC Champions League Two after having had a dominant 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign. After their participation in the previous edition of the ACL Two was disrupted by unfortunate circumstances, the Mariners will be pushing for a much brighter showing this time around.

They’ve been placed in a tricky group that contains Iranian giants Sepahan FC, but the Mariners have enough quality in their squad to compete for a top-two place in the group.

Mohun Bagan are fortunate enough to have a quality foreign contingent, including clinical forwards like Jamie Maclaren, Jason Cummings and Dimitri Petratos to lead the charge for them. These players will need to be at their ruthless best to add to the goals and help the Mariners go forward in the tournament.

Mohun Bagan have quite a memorable history of having featured in Asian competitions many times in the past. Some former (and current) Mohun Bagan players have excelled in the continental matches for the Mariners, helping them to success and hold their own in the Asian games. Here we shall look at top-5 goalscorers for Mohun Bagan in Asian competitions.

5. David Williams

David Williams had a pretty memorable stint at Mohun Bagan during his relatively short stay with the club. He became a key part for the Mariners from 2020 and was able to play in multiple AFC Cup editions as well.

Williams was only able to score one goal in the 2020-21 AFC Cup for the Mariners, as well as providing an assist in his four appearances in that competition.

However, he really thrived in the 2021-22 AFC Cup, especially in the qualification campaign. Williams scored four goals in two qualifiers clash for that edition, before going onto score one goal in three group games.

The Australian forward lead the line with pride for Mohun Bagan, adding unpredictability with his clever off-the-movement and ability to get at the end of chances. He scored six goals in Asian competitions for the Mariners, one of the most scored by any foreigners for the club in those stages.

4. Sony Norde

Sony Norde gained an iconic status among Mohun Bagan fans during his time at the club, mostly because of the swagger and sheer quality he added to their attack.

Norde played for the Mariners from 2014 to 2019, helping them win the I-League as well as the Federation Cup. The Haitian winger loved to torment defenders with his brilliant dribbling skills and became a major fan favourite because of his ability to turn up in the big games.

Norde performed really well for the Kolkata giants in the AFC competitions as well, especially in the 2015-16 AFC Cup when he scored three goals and provided two assists in the group stages.

Norde was also able to score three goals in the 2016-17 AFC Cup campaign for the Mariners, being a driving force with his ability to come up with important goals and clinical final third work.

He scored six goals and also provided four assists in seven continental matches for the Mariners, and remains one of their best performers in Asian competitions.

3. Liston Colaco

Liston Colaco had been quite a consistent member of the Mohun Bagan squad and played a major role in their success over the last few years.

He’s also been blessed enough to participate in multiple Asian competitions with the Kolkata giants, allowing the winger to get the experience of testing his qualities against international opponents.

Colaco was fortunate to get to play in the AFC in his first season with the Mariners, as he managed to get two goal contributions (one goal, one assist) in four AFC Cup games in the 2020-21 season.

He did much better in the 2021-22 campaign, scoring four goals and providing two assists in four games, even scoring a hattrick against Bashundhara Kings.

Colaco scored two goals in the 2023-24 AFC Cup for the Mariners, but was unable to do much in their short 2024-25 ACL Two outing. Colaco has 10 goal contributions (seven goals, three assists) in Asian competitions for the Mariners, a tally he’ll be determined to build on in the 2025-26 ACL Two campaign.

2. Jeje Lalpekhlua

Jeje Lalpekhlua actually spent a relatively short period in Mohun Bagan, spending around three years with the club – out of which two years were as a loanee.

Despite that, the former India international was able to make a major impact as a viable goal option for the Mariners. Jeje scored 25 goals in just 67 appearances for Mohun Bagan and was able to impress for them in the AFC competitions as well.

He participated in the Mariners’ 2016-16 AFC Champions League qualification, scoring a goal in their two games. Lalpekhlua was particularly brilliant in the 2016 AFC Cup, scoring six goals in seven games to drive them into the knockout rounds and helping them win their group. Jeje produced some clinical performances for the Mariners, scoring 10 goals and providing two assists in 15 AFC games.

1. Sisir Ghosh

Sisir Ghosh was one of Mohun Bagan’s best players in the late 1980s and was able to thrive in the big-game pressure for the Mariners. He was part of the first Mohun Bagan squads to take part in AFC competitions, which happened in the late 1980s through the AFC Asian Club Championship.

Ghosh became Mohun Bagan’s first player to score a hat-trick in an Asian competition, doing so against Pakistan side Crescent Texile FC in the 1988-89 Asian Club Championship.

Ghosh played a crucial role in helping Mohun Bagan top their group in that tournament, scoring five goals for the Mariners in that edition. He had also scored six goals in four games in the 1987 Asian Club Championship and remains Mohun Bagan’s highest goal-scorer in Asian competitions with 11 goals to his name!
