The Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru erupted in joy after India’s Ryan Williams broke the deadlock and scored a historic goal for the Indian national team against two-time FIFA World Cup participants, Panama, in the international friendly fixture.

Ryan scored against a team that rubbed shoulders with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Luka Modric and the best players in the world, recently in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Ever since switching his allegiance to India, Ryan has been in red-hot form and has injected a different energy into the squad.

In the last few years, the most burning question in Indian football has been: “Who will lead India upfront after Chhetri?” Maybe after so many trials and errors, the Blue Tigers have finally found their answer.

Ryan Williams, hailing from an athletic family was born in Perth, Australia, to an English father and a mother of Anglo-Indian descent. His maternal grandfather, Lincoln “Linky” Grostate, even represented Bombay in the Santosh Trophy in the 1950s.

During his time with Bengaluru FC, he renounced his Australian passport and switched his allegiance to India to play for the Indian national football team.

However, the last goal against Panama was not his first goal in national team colours.

AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers – Kochi

Goal 1: India 2-1 Hong Kong (31 March 2026)

The Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium in God’s Own Country geared up to host the final group stage fixture of the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. India were already out of the qualification race, and the former Fulham & Leeds winger was making his debut for the Indian team.

It took Williams less than 240 seconds to score his first goal in national team colours with his left-footed shot after a brilliant assist from Manvir Singh. Akash Mishra doubled the lead in the 50th minute.

Hong Kong pulled one back in the 65th minute via Everton Camargo, but the Indian defence held their nerves and India won the game against Hong Kong 2-1 in Kochi.

FIFA International Friendlies – Bengaluru

Goal 2: India 1-1 Panama (25 September 2026)

The Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru geared up to host the opening fixture of India’s marquee international window when India locked horns with two-time FIFA World Cup participants Panama.

He was playing in a familiar venue at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, a place where he has scored so many goals in the Bengaluru FC jersey. But it was now time to rise to the occasion for his country and score a goal.

And Ryan didn’t disappoint. He delivered when it mattered the most. He scored against a side which even Thomas Tuchel’s England couldn’t score against for the first 45 minutes. A brilliant pass from Akash Mishra, and Ryan made no mistake in finding the back of the net.

Omar Valencia’s strike equalised the score in the 68th minute and India earned a well-deserved draw against Panama in the Silicon Valley of India.
