India take on Bhutan in SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 semifinal

The Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa gears up to host the semifinal of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026, where the home team India lock horns with Bhutan.

Both sides have reached the semifinal in the last two editions but failed to progress to the finals. India are the most successful side in the SAFF Women’s Championship after winning five titles. Crispin’s girl will be determined to propel India to the finals after seven years.

History has not been kind to Bhutan when they played India, they lost 18-0 and 11-0. But a lot has changed in the last 14 years, and Bhutan regularly make it to the semifinal and have been knocking the doors of their first ever SAFF Women’s Championship Finals.

We are all set for a thrilling clash between the two sides, who will leave no stone unturned as they battle for a place in the final. Both the Blue Tigresses and the Dragon Ladies will give it their all with a spot in the title clash at stake.

What to expect from the clash?

The Blue Tigresses have been just phenomenal at home. They began their SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 campaign with a 11-0 win over Maldives in the opener after Aveka Singh went on to score four goals and a brace from Karishma and Priyangka saw India winning the game easily.

But their second game was not at all easy. Crispin’s girls were up against two-time defending champions Bangladesh, who got the better of India in the last two editions.

A top-of-the-table finish was a must for India to enter the semifinal confidently. A draw would have been enough for India but goals from Pyari, Malavika and Lynda were enough to seal a 3-0 win for India.

Bhutan, a side that barely made it past the group stages have been knocking the doors of the semifinal in the last two editions. They are coming after a 4-0 win over Sri Lanka after an opening defeat to Nepal.

They have strong players like Deki Lhazom, who has even played for Al Ittihad and in the AFC Women’s Champions League. Alongside that, their captain Tshering is also in terrific form as she scored a hattrick against Sri Lanka recently.

India are unarguably the favourite, but Bhutan would be keen to cause a big upset, and they have all it takes to cause one.

Crispin’s girls would be keen to clinch a victory in the regulation time to avoid dragging the game to penalties, where the odds tilt unevenly.
