Young winger ends three-year stay with the Red and Gold Brigade.

East Bengal fans are still celebrating the club’s long-awaited ISL title, but another major development has grabbed attention in Kolkata football. Young winger Sayan Banerjee has officially joined arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant, bringing an end to his three-year spell with the Red and Gold Brigade.

The move comes as a surprise for many supporters, especially because Sayan was considered one of the club’s brightest homegrown talents. Having come through the ranks and impressed in the Calcutta Football League (CFL), he had become a familiar face among East Bengal followers.

Transfers between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan always attract attention, but this one is likely to be particularly emotional for supporters.

Sayan was seen as a player who represented the future of East Bengal. Now, he will be wearing green and maroon instead of red and gold.

However, a lack of regular opportunities with the senior team appears to have influenced his decision to move on and look for a fresh challenge.

Sayan’s football journey began to gain attention during his time with Kalighat Milan Sangha. His performances in the CFL earned him a move to East Bengal in 2023, where he quickly established himself as one of the club’s promising young players.

The winger impressed with his pace, dribbling ability and willingness to take on defenders. While he spent most of his time with the reserve side, he also got opportunities with the senior team and was part of the squad that won the Super Cup under Carles Cuadrat.

Over the years, Sayan continued to develop and remained one of the standout performers in East Bengal’s youth and reserve setup.

One of the reasons Sayan became popular among East Bengal fans was his performances in high-voltage Kolkata Derby matches, the games which are much more than just about wins and loss.

The Asansol-born winger scored a memorable goal against Mohun Bagan in Kolkata derby and regularly delivered strong performances in big games. His energy, confidence and attacking style made him a player supporters enjoyed watching.

During the 2025 CFL season, he once again showed his quality by scoring five goals and providing one assist. He was one of East Bengal’s most important attacking players throughout the campaign.

Why the move happened?

Despite his performances at the reserve level, first-team opportunities were hard to come by. Under Oscar Bruzon, Sayan found it difficult to break into the senior side on a regular basis.

For a young player looking to take the next step in his career, regular football is crucial. Mohun Bagan’s interest offered him a new opportunity and a chance to continue his development in a different environment.

The Mariners have been strengthening their squad depth and see Sayan as a player with significant potential for the future.

While East Bengal fans may be disappointed to see him leave, the move could be an important step in the youngster’s career. The upcoming CFL season may even see him face his former club for the first time, adding another chapter to one of Indian football’s greatest rivalries.
