FC Goa vs Mumbai City FC Player Ratings: Brison Fernandes stars in semi-final tragedy for Phurba Lachenpa

FC Goa have qualified for their second consecutive AIFF Super Cup final.

FC Goa are on course to defend their AIFF Super Cup title. They brushed their rivals, Mumbai City FC, in a comprehensive outing. The match started on an outrageous note, with Iker Guarrotxena being sent off in the tunnel and replaced by Javier Siverio.

Brison Fernandes stole the show with another goal in front of the home fans. David Timor backed the youngster by scoring another to extend the lead. Mumbai attempted a comeback after Brandon Fernandes’ goal, but could not find a way past Goa’s resilient defence.

Player Ratings

Hrithik Tiwari – 7/10

A calm outing for the young goalkeeper. Mumbai had fewer shots on target in the first half. He stayed alert and handled everything comfortably except for an unnecessary foul which led to the penalty and the one goal the Gaurs conceded. He saved 6 shots of Mumbai City and did incredibly well to keep FC Goa in the lead.

Pol Moreno Sanchez – 7/10

Pol Moreno Sanchez had an average outing doing just enough to keep things steady for Goa. He stepped in with a few well-timed tackles and read situations cleanly, helping break Mumbai’s attack when pressure built.

Boris Singh – 7/10

Boris had an average defensive game and he was using his physicality to hold off  Mumbai’s attackers. He also stayed committed in duels and did not shy away from physical battles on his flank.

Aakash Sangwan – 6.5/10

Aakash Sangwan put in a solid two-way performance, staying strong defensively while also pushing forward whenever it was needed. Received a yellow card for a tackle on Vikram Pratap Singh

Ronney Wilson Kharbudon – 7/10

He stayed calm in one-on-one situations, even when matched up against seasoned Mumbai City players, and read the game with confidence. A good defensive display

Ayush Chhetri – 7/10

Ayush brought good pace and energy into the midfield helping Goa push forward with quicker transitions. He covered ground well and tried to keep the momentum  whenever he got on the ball.

David Timor – 7.5/10

Timor made his presence felt with the second goal, striking cleanly in the 23rd minute and capitalising on a slight error from Phurba Lachenpa. Beyond the goal, he offered good control in midfield. A well-taken goal and a steady overall performance.

Borja Herrera – 7.5/10

Borja Herrera was one of Goa’s more active creative outlets, constantly looking for ways to break Mumbai City’s defence. He pushed the momentum whenever he could and kept trying to create chances.

Dejan Drazic – 7/10

Drazic delivered a fairly average performance in midfield. He held the possession well enough and kept the game moving without taking many risks.

Javier Siverio – 7.5/10

Replacing Iker, Siverio worked hard and produced a solid effort in the first half with a shot from outside the box. He offered good movement up front in the final third.

Brison Fernandes – 8/10

Brison was easily FC Goa’s standout performer on the night. He opened the scoring with a well-taken goal and constantly creating chances and driving Goa forward in the final third. Although he picked up a yellow card for a tackle on Akash Mishra, it didn’t take away from the impact he had across the match.

Substitutions

Udanta Singh

Came in the 70th minute to replace Brison Fernandez. Udanta showed some great pace but wasn’t able to convert the chances. Had some good runs into the final third.

Sahil Tavora – NA

Came on very late and didn’t have enough time to leave a clear impact.

Abdul Rabeeh – NA

Introduced in the final minutes, mainly to add fresh legs and did some good clearances and a couple of good runs in the limited time he had.

Muhammad Nemil – NA

Entered the match too late to meaningfully affect the rhythm or outcome.

 Iker Guarrotxena – NA

Iker was sent off the field before kickoff, leaving FC Goa to adjust their plans immediately. With a red card being shown, he couldn’t take part in the match.

Mumbai City FC

Phurba Lachenpa (4/10)

Mumbai City FC’s goalkeeper had a forgettable night in the goal. He conceded multiple goals but the fashion in which he conceded made things worse for him. The semi-final tragedy will haunt Phuraba Lachenpa, who is one of the consistent players on Mumbai’s roster, for days with no football in foreseeable future.

Valpuia (5/10)

Mumbai’s defense was in shambles today and Valpuia as a part of defensive unit also had a poor game. Operating in the wide areas of the defense, could not do much to contain Goa’s onslaught in the first half.

Tiri (5/10)

The most experienced campaigner in Mumbai’s defense failed to marshal his backline. The Gaurs found ways to penetrate Mumbai’s defense led by Tiri. The Mumbai City fans would have expected more from him.

Lallianzuala Chhangte (4/10)

The Mumbai City FC skipper missed a penalty in the second half which proved to be costly. He could not create much on the wings for the Islanders, ended up having an abysmal day.

Brandon Fernandes (7/10)

Brandon Fernandes scored against his former club in the semi-final to provided Mumbai City fans with a rare moment to cheer. Brandon did create a few chances for the Islanders but the lack of sharpness in the final third did not help Mumbai’s cause.

Jorge Ortiz Mendoza (6/10)

A rather underwhelming performance from one of the main man in Mumbai’s attack. Jorge Ortiz Mendoza had some moments of brilliance but nothing substantial from the Spaniard to change the course of the game.

Lalnuntluanga (6/10)

Lalnuntluanga could not have authority in the midfield in the first half, but had a relatively improved game in the second half. The youngster is still a new face in the setup and will take time to settle in.

Bijay Chhetri (5/10)

Bijay Chhetri started with Tiri in the central defence, and like the senior partner, made some mistakes that allowed FC Goa attackers to put pressure. Much like the other Islanders, Bijay Chhetri also settled in the second half.

Jon Toral (6/10)

Jon Toral in the midfield had an important responsibility in the midfield but was not on the money. Toral failed to find the right passes to the players in the advanced areas. The creative output from the Spanish midfielder could not meet Kratky’s expectations.

Jorge Pereyra Diaz (7/10)

The Argentinian had a good game in the advanced areas of the pitch. Jorge Pereyra Diaz also provided an assist for Brandon Fernandes to bring Mumbai back into the game. However, there were instances where Diaz could have extracted more through his creative skills.

Akash Mishra (6/10)

Akash Mishra, since his return from injury, has not looked at his best, and the semi-final against Goa was another match where we did not see him performing at an optimum level. There were errors in the defence, and the Indian international would be looking to address them.

Substitutes

Franklin (6/10)

The youngster did not have much time to do anything of value.

Vikram Partap Singh (6/10)

The Indian winger was introduced in the 72nd minute to find the late goal but there was not much on offer from Vikram.

Puipuia (6/10)

He replaced Jon Toral, but could not bring in much change.
