History repeats itself as Thrissur becomes first team to beat Calicut in Kozhikode

The roaring Malabar coast came alive late on Saturday to host defending Super League Kerala champions Calicut FC and Thrissur Magic FC for an entertaining clash. Calicut entered this game as the favourites after winning the first game of the season against Kochi 2-1.

Thrissur, led by former Mohammedan gaffer Chernyshov, lost their first game against Malappuram FC. Against all odds, history repeated itself as Calicut faced a shocking defeat to Thrissur Magic. Mailson Alves’ headed goal was enough to clinch all three wins for the away side.

After Mailson scored the opener in the 36th minute, Thrissur did not hold themselves back. Calicut also kept knocking on the doors for an equaliser, but a strong defensive display from Thrissur was enough to seal the victory for the away side.

Things have become interesting now as five teams are levelled at the same number points atop and three of them have a 0 goal difference. Kochi lost two games in a row and are at the bottom. They will need to pull off wins to stay alive in the semi-final race.
