Syria announce 23-man squad for Intercontinental Cup 2024; Mohammed Dahoud excluded
The Eagles of Qasioun enter as the favourites for the cup.
Syria FA manager Jose Lana has announced the squad for the upcoming Intercontinental Cup 2024 set to commence in Hyderabad. The Spanish manager who took charge of the national team in August has named a 23-man squad for the competition on Sunday. The upcoming cup fixture will mark the first competitive game for the Middle Eastern side under Lana’s tenure. The squad list features notable additions who have recently changed their national allegiance to Syria.
Regardless of Syria’s exit from the recent World Cup Qualifiers, Jose Lana finds the team’s enthusiasm and strong showings to be the silver lining in taking charge of the side. Lana certainly has a better pool of players to choose from for the cup fixtures, with a list of European and Latin American players having been convinced to represent Syria in recent months.
Former German international and Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Mohammed Dahoud was one of the most prominent names on the list, yet Lana has decided against including him in the Intercontinental Cup squad. However, the likes of Esteban Glellel, Emiliano Amor, Elmar Abraham, and others have made it to the squad.
A familiar face within Indian football, Mumbai City FC defender Thaer Krouma, has been included in the squad by Lana. Elmar Abraham has been selected to achieve stability alongside the experienced playmaker Dahelo Irandust in central midfield.
The Spanish manager has also called up the young left winger Noah Shamoun, who plays in the Danish top tier, to join the 20-year-old Mustafa Abdullatif on the flanks. The decisive force in attack for Lana will surely be the formidable and lethal striker Pablo Sabbag.
The tactician has seemingly put together a mix of youth and experience, certainly aiming to make an impact in his debut competition with the team. Being the highest-ranked team in the competition, the Eagles of Qasioun are certainly a strong favourite to win the Intercontinental Cup. Syria will face Mauritius in their opening fixture of the Intercontinental Cup 2024.
