India’s last five meetings against Hong Kong
The Blue Tigers beat Hong Kong 4-0 in their recent game.
The draw for the group stage of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers – Round 3 has been made. India have been paired alongside Singapore, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh with only the top team qualifying for the continental tournament.
Hong Kong are currently ranked 156th in the world in terms of FIFA rankings. However, they will certainly pose a threat to the Blue Tigers. In terms of head-to-head stats, India have won eight, drawn four, and lost four to the Dragons in a total of 16 football games.
Here are the results of the last five encounters between India and Hong Kong:
5. Hong Kong 1-3 India (FIFA World Cup 1994 Qualifiers)
Seoul in South Korea hosted the FIFA World Cup 1994 qualifier game between the two nations on 13th June 1993. The Indian national football team had lost the reverse fixture 2-1 a month before and were hungry for revenge.
I.M. Vijayan was the hero on the night for the Indians with two goals. Bhupinder Thakur also scored for the Blue Tigers while Wong Chi Keung got the consolation for Hong Kong. The win against the Dragons was India’s only win in the FIFA World Cup 1994 qualifiers.
4. Hong Kong 2-2 India (International Friendly – 2006)
Playing at the Hong Kong Stadium, India and Hong Kong contested an entertaining draw on 18th February 2006. Syed Nayeemuddin’s India showed fighting spirit on the night as they came back to tie the game.
The Dragons opened the scoring in the 3rd minute through Gerard before Chun-Bong Law headed home the ball in the 17th minute. India were rejuvenated in the second half as Syed Nabi and Bhaichung Bhutia scored in close succession to help the Blue Tigers get a 2-2 draw on the night.
3. Hong Kong 2-1 India (International Friendly – 2009)
Playing an international friendly, the two nations locked horns on 14th January 2009 in Hong Kong. The game was evenly contested, however, the hosts scored in the closing minutes to win 2-1.
Hong Kong’s Yiu Chung Au Yeung opened the scoring for the hosts before the legendary Bhaichung Bhutia scored for the Blue Tigers. The home side had the last laugh as Ng Wai Chiu scored in the 90th minute to seal the win.
2. India 0-1 Hong Kong (International Friendly – 2010)
On 4th October 2010, both nations lined up to play a friendly at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune. The game was played in preparation for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2011 tournament.
The Blue Tigers had their chances in the game but they missed to capitalize and the visitors made the most out of it. Hong Kong’s captain Li Haiqiang scored the only goal of the game in the 80th minute to help his side to a 1-0 win.
1. India 4-0 Hong Kong (AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers 2023)
The latest fixture between the Blue Tigers and the Dragons was played on 14th June 2022. The two nations lined up at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata for their AFC Asian Cup 3rd round qualification game in front of more than 48,000 supporters.
India won the game comfortably as Anwar Ali, Sunil Chhetri, Manvir Singh, and Ishan Pandita found the back of the net for Igor Stimac’s side. The 4-0 win over Hong Kong helped the Blue Tigers qualify for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
