Head coach Khalid Jamil might call in for a reinforcement.

The Indian senior men’s football team‘s injury woes deepened after Ryan Williams did not travel with the squad to Tajikistan for the upcoming international friendlies.

The forward, who picked up a hamstring injury during India’s Unity Cup 2026 campaign, remained unavailable as the Blue Tigers reached Dushanbe in the early hours of Monday ahead of their two-match series against Tajikistan.

With Williams now expected to miss both fixtures during the June FIFA International Window, head coach Khalid Jamil could be forced into making further changes to a squad that has already been severely disrupted over the past fortnight.

India are also likely to call up a replacement player in the coming days as they prepare for their first match against Tajikistan on June 5.

Ryan Williams was one of India’s most energetic performers during the Unity Cup despite the team’s disappointing results. He provided pace and directness in attack and was among the few players capable of stretching opposition defences.

However, concerns emerged during India’s semi-final clash against Jamaica at The Valley in London. Shortly before the hour mark, Williams appeared to be struggling physically and was seen leaving the field alongside the team physio.

Ryan Williams was substituted moments later, raising immediate fears of a muscle injury.

Initial assessments pointed towards a hamstring problem, and the latest developments have effectively ruled him out of India’s tour of Tajikistan.

The attacker did not travel with the squad from London and now faces a race against time to regain fitness before future international assignments.

Ryan Williams’ absence further compounds the problems Khalid Jamil has encountered since taking charge of the national team.

India arrived at the Unity Cup with a depleted squad

India’s troubles actually began even before a ball was kicked in the Unity Cup. The Blue Tigers travelled to London with only 18 players after a series of withdrawals significantly reduced the size of the squad.

The biggest disruption came from reigning Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who recalled eight players despite them initially reporting to the national camp.

The players had joined India’s preparations and were expected to travel for the tournament. However, they were later instructed by the club to return, leaving Khalid Jamil with limited options just days before the competition.

India were also forced to cope without defender Anwar Ali, who withdrew because of injury. Meanwhile, Ashique Kuruniyan was omitted from the final travelling group after failing to recover fully from fitness concerns.

As a result, the AIFF moved quickly to strengthen the squad. Midfielder Macarton Nickson and defender Nikhil Barla were called up on May 26 before the team departed for London.

Shortly afterwards, forwards Mohammed Sanan and Vikram Partap Singh were added to the travelling contingent and joined the squad in England on May 27. The youngsters subsequently featured during the tournament as India attempted to cope with the shortage of available players.

Disappointing Unity Cup campaign ends without a goal

India’s campaign in London ultimately ended in frustration. The Blue Tigers suffered a 2-0 defeat against Jamaica in the semi-finals.

Courtney Clarke opened the scoring with a spectacular long-range strike inside the opening ten minutes before Kaheim Dixon sealed victory with an impressive individual goal late in the contest.

Although Gurpreet Singh Sandhu produced several important saves and India improved after halftime, the team struggled to create enough clear-cut opportunities.

The situation remained largely unchanged in the third-place playoff against Zimbabwe. India showed some defensive organisation but once again lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

A first-half penalty from Prince Dube proved decisive as Zimbabwe secured a 1-0 victory and third place, while India concluded the tournament with two defeats and no goals scored.

FIFA window could open door for Mohun Bagan players’ return

While Ryan Williams’ injury presents a fresh headache, there may also be some positive news for Khalid Jamil.

The June FIFA International Window is now officially underway, meaning players who were previously unavailable because of club-related complications could potentially rejoin the national team.

Several of the Mohun Bagan players who were recalled before the Unity Cup remain part of India’s broader plans and could now become available for selection if discussions between the AIFF, coaching staff and the club progress positively.

Their return would significantly strengthen the squad, particularly in areas where India lacked depth during the Unity Cup campaign.

Given the injury concerns and the physically demanding schedule, additional reinforcements would provide Khalid Jamil with much-needed options ahead of the two friendlies.

Khalid Jamil may hand opportunities to new faces

The national team management are also exploring alternative solutions as they assess the squad’s fitness situation.

Before departing for Tajikistan, Khalid Jamil had already suggested that fresh players could be brought into the group if required. Ryan Williams’ absence only increases the likelihood of further additions.

The upcoming matches offer the coaching staff an opportunity to evaluate players ahead of future competitions while also helping the team build momentum after a difficult start under the new head coach.

With several regulars showing a poor show of form during the Unity Cup, the friendlies could provide another chance for emerging players to stake their claim for a long-term place in the national setup.

India eye improved display against Tajikistan

Despite the setbacks, the Tajikistan friendlies remain important fixtures for India. The Blue Tigers will be looking to register their second win under Khalid Jamil and improve upon the performances displayed in London.

More importantly, the matches will allow the coaching staff to continue implementing their tactical ideas and assess the squad ahead of future competitive assignments with the ASEAN Cup and the SAFF Championship 2026 coming up.
