The Red Miners became the Champions of India in the 2021-23 season.

Jamshedpur FC from Jamshedpur, India’s first planned industrial city of independent India, boasts a unique footballing culture. After international cricket was abandoned in the city, the locals found solace and happiness in the beautiful game of football. Fueled by the eminent Tata Football Academy, which produced some of the finest footballers in the country, this city’s love for football has been evergreen for decades.

After Jamshedpur FCβ€˜s inception into the Indian Super League, the club has always been knocking on the playoff doors, but has always been unlucky to make it to the top four. From the legendary Steve Coppel, Cesar Ferrando, to Antonio Iriondo couldn’t yield results as the Red Miners got labelled as a β€œmid-table team”. However, the 2021-22 season was a rare exception when they became the Champions of India.

What was so special about the 2021-22 season?

The COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the entire ISL was relocated to take place in Goa behind closed doors. After narrowly missing the playoffs in the 2020-21 season, despite roping in some of the finest players like Nerijus Valskis, Peter Hartley and Stephen Eze under the tutelage of Owen Coyle, the club decided to retain the services of the Englishmen.

Owen Coyle made slight changes to the squad, bringing in his trusted Eli Sabia to replace the Nigerian centre back, Stephen Eze. Midseason, Nerijus Valskis was substituted by Daniel Chima Chukwu. Most importantly, the arrival of Greg Stewart made all the difference.

The story of underdogs lifting the ISL Shield

The big boys, Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC, emerged as the favourites to retain the silverware next season. But, the season ended up with two not-so-popular sides like Hyderabad FC and Jamshedpur FC grabbing all the awards.

The Red Miners were in sublime form that season. They managed to win 13 matches and endure 4 draws in the 20 matches they played in the league stages. Despite languishing in the top two, they had formidable opponents in the form of Hyderabad FC and Mohun Bagan awaiting their presence in the last three league games.

Toppling the Nizams and the Mariners to win the ISL Shield

Jamshedpur FC had to secure a positive result against Manolo Marquez’s Hyderabad FC to bolster their Shield ambitions. In a must-win game, not only did they topple the Nizams, but they also handed them a 3-0 defeat despite being reduced to ten men.

The final league game of the season was the Shield-decider between Mohun Bagan and Jamshedpur FC. The Mariners had to win this match by a +2 goal difference, whereas a draw or a narrow 1-0 defeat was enough to clinch the Shield for the Red Miners.

Ritwik Das’s 56th-minute strike was enough to propel Jamshedpur FC to the finishing line, and the Red Miners, under the tutelage of Owen Coyle, went on to win their first-ever trophy in the form of the ISL Shield. Tonight, in the final encounter against FC Goa in the Kalinga Super Cup, they have a chance to add yet another silverware to their trophy cabinet.
