Unity Cup 2026: What happened when India last played in United Kingdom?

Stephen Constantine’s India were winless in their last visit to UK
The Indian national football team is all set to visit the United Kingdom after two decades to take on same opponents, Jamaica, in the Unity Cup 2026 starter. The Blue Tigers are led by Khalid Jamil, who will be keen to redeem himself after a disappointing campaign in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
This is a golden opportunity for the Indian players to ply their trade against some of the finest teams in the world. From former African champions Nigeria to Jamaica, who were just a whisker away from qualifying for the 2026 World Cup to Zimbabwe, all countries are ranked higher than India in the latest FIFA rankings.
Ahead of the two big games in the Valley, home of former FA Cup winners Charlton Athletic, we take a ride down memory lane to find out what happened when India last played in the United Kingdom.
Buildup before coming to London

It was a new dawn for the Indian football team after Stephen Constantine took over the reins from the legendary Sukhwinder Singh and Islam Ahmedov. The team had low expectations before heading to Vietnam for the LG Cup.
Constantine hardly had a few weeks to prepare his players in the Jamshedpur camp before flying to Ho Chi Minh City. But what happened in Vietnam shocked Asia as India went on to top their group after winning against Vietnam and drawing against Singapore.
In the semi-finals, India defeated Petrokimia FC and in the finals, India made a historic comeback after going two goals down to win it 3-2 against the home team Vietnam. India were headed to London after a massive performance against top continental teams.
Talking about Jamaica, they made history by qualifying for the 1998 World Cup and even won against Japan, but a terrible campaign in the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers saw them missing out. Before facing India, their form was very unpredictable.
They were coming after defeats to the United States and Nigeria, but went on to win games against Grenada and Saint Lucia just before flying to London.
India suffered a big defeat at the hands of Jamaica in Watford

Stephen Constantine was back in his country of birth, England, for the Jam In tour. Both teams were in good form, and an intense match was anticipated at Vicarage Road in Watford.
Jamaica were led by Carl Brown, and he fielded a strong starting lineup. Constantine’s team also looked strong on paper, with the legendary Bhaichung Bhutia upfront with Abhishek Yadav, who was coming after scoring the winner in the dying minutes in the finals of the LG Cup.
The game was goalless until the first thirty minutes, but Jermaine Anderson broke the deadlock in the 34th minute. India did try to make a comeback in the second half, but conceding a penalty just before the final quarter changed everything.
Aaron Lawrence converted from the spot and made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute. When India was still trying to find at least a consolation, Ian Goodison scored in the 86th minute to make it 3-0. Goodison was playing for Hull City at the time and later went on to play over 400 games for Tranmere Rovers FC.
India fought back strongly in the final friendly at Molineux

The Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton was still reeling from that historic collapse from Wolves, who were once 11 points clear at the top to gain promotion in the Premier League.
In the second game, India made a few changes. Sangram Mukherjee was replaced by the young Rajat Ghosh between the sticks. Talking about Jamaica, some big names like Claude Davis, who impressed a lot in these friendlies and later on went on to play for top teams like Crystal Palace and Sheffield United.
The game was a tightly contested affair with both sides having their fair share of chances, but it was the resilient defensive unit of both teams that was impregnable that day, and some terrific saves made things even more difficult for the strikers.
The game ended 0-0, and it was really impressive from India, who were coming after a 3-0 defeat to the same Jamaican side just a few days ago. India remained winless throughout the campaign, but Stephen Constantine had already grabbed a lot of eyeballs after this performance.
