India vs Jamaica: Three key player battles to watch out for in Unity Cup 2026

India will take on Jamaica in semi-final 2 of the Unity Cup 2026.
With East Bengal FC winning the ISL title on the final day of the ISL 2025-26 season, club football has come to an end for this campaign, and it is now time for Indian football fans to turn their attention towards the Indian National Team and support the Blue Tigers.
After failing to win any of their first five games and missing out on qualification for the main tournament of the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, Khalid Jamil’s side ended the campaign on a high with a 2-1 win against Hong Kong national football team in front of the home fans in Kochi. Ryan Williams and Akash Mishra scored the goals for the Blue Tigers that night.
After a short break from club football, the Indian players return to international duty as they prepare to participate in the Unity Cup 2026, which will be held in the United Kingdom. The challenge is expected to be even tougher this time, as they will be facing teams that are relatively stronger than the Blue Tigers, at least on paper.
Jamaica, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and India will participate in the tournament and compete for the Unity Cup title. India will face Jamaica in their opening fixture, while Zimbabwe and Nigeria will battle it out in the other semifinal.
The match is scheduled to kick off on May 28 at 12:00 AM IST at the Valley in London. With the Jamaican national team resting a few key players for this fixture, India can hope to give the Reggae Boyz a tough challenge.
Take a look at the key battles that could decide the outcome of the game.
Jeakson Singh vs Isaac Hayden

Even before the start of the tournament, India suffered multiple injury setbacks, especially in midfield. Nikhil Prabhu has been sidelined for a long time, while Danish Farooq recently picked up an injury. To make matters worse, Mohun Bagan Super Giant refused to release Sahal Abdul Samad, Anirudh Thapa and Apuia for the Unity Cup 2026.
This has left Khalid Jamil in a difficult position, with only two natural midfielders available for the tournament. One is Jeakson Singh, who has not started many games for the national team in recent times, and the other is Ricky Shabong, who has earned his maiden national team call-up.
The midfield battle is expected to play a crucial role in deciding the outcome of the game, with Jeakson Singh set to go up against Isaac Hayden, who has vast experience playing in English football across multiple tiers, including the Premier League.
Hayden thrives with the ball at his feet and possesses a strong passing range that allows him to progress play from midfield. Having also played as a centre-back at club level, Jeakson can drop in between the defenders to recycle possession and help move the ball forward.
Both players are physically strong, and a fierce battle in midfield is expected when the two sides take the field.
Noufal PN vs Joel Latibeaudiere

With Liston Colaco unavailable due to Mohun Bagan SG’s refusal to release players and Ashique being unavailable as well, India are left with limited options on the left wing. So, Noufal is expected to be the primary option, while players such as Farukh Choudhary, Rahim Ali and Edmund could also fill in if needed.
Noufal who has had a good Indian Super League (ISL) season with Mumbai City FC, is expected to face a difficult challenge against Joel Latibeaudiere, who plays for Coventry City FC in the EFL Championship (recently promoted to the Premier League).
Noufal primarily plays on the left wing and became a regular starter in Mumbai City FC’s lineup this season ahead of established names like Vikram Partap Singh.
The winger enjoyed a strong ISL campaign with 5 G/A to his name, and questions were raised earlier when he did not receive a callup for India’s AFC Asian Cup qualifier clash against Hong Kong. However, in the Unity Cup 2026, Noufal is expected to either start or play a crucial role off the bench with significant minutes.
On the other hand, Latibeaudiere is a versatile player capable of operating both as a full-back and a center-back. Defensively, he is solid and comfortable on the ball. However, with Rudolph Speid expected to deploy him at right-back, he could be less effective in contributing going forward.
Nonetheless, Jamaica are likely to play with a high defensive line against India, with their full-backs and midfielders pushing forward for goals. This could leave spaces open for Noufal on the counterattack, where he is at his most dangerous. His defensive work rate will also be important, particularly when pressing Joel and trying to win the ball back high up the pitch.

Ryan Williams vs Damion Lowe

One of the main reasons Indian football fans will tune into the match is to watch India’s key attacking threat, Ryan Williams. The Bengaluru FC forward also has previous experience playing in London, having represented several English clubs, including Fulham FC and Oxford United FC.
As seen against Hong Kong, Khalid Jamil is expected to deploy Ryan Williams in a more central role rather than on the wings, given the clinical edge he offers in front of goal. He will come up against Damion Lowe, one of the most experienced players in the current Jamaican squad selected for the Unity Cup.
Lowe is a tall and physical centre-back who has experience playing for clubs such as Inter Miami. He often steps into midfield to win possession higher up the pitch, and this could create spaces for Ryan Williams, who is expected to operate more as a false nine rather than a traditional striker.
Ryan’s intelligent movement to create space inside the box could also prove to be an advantage in his battle against Lowe, since the Jamaican defender is expected to dominate aerial deliveries into the box with his physicality and aerial prowess.
