India eye win over Zimbabwe for third place in Unity Cup 2026

India will face Zimbabwe for third place playoff
The Valley Stadium in South East London, home to former FA Cup winners, Charlton Athletic gear up to host the third-place playoff game between India and Zimbabwe. Both the teams are coming after defeats to Nigeria and Jamaica in the Unity Cup 2026 semi-finals and will be hoping to secure a third-place finish.
The Blue Tigers came so close to scoring the equaliser against Jamaica that was disallowed. After an early goal from Courtney Clarke, Kaheim Dixon scored another one in the early minutes of the last quarter to end any possibility of a late comeback from the Blue Tigers.
In an all-African semi-final, Zimbabwe conceded an early goal after Femi Azeez found the back of the net in just 4 minutes. Zimbabwe kept pushing hard for the equaliser, but another goal from the Millwall forward saw Nigeria book their finals berth for the fourth consecutive edition.
The Stakes
India

Keeping aside that win against Hong Kong, India’s last win in a major competition came almost seven months ago when Khalid’s men defeated Oman in penalties to clinch a bronze at the CAFA Nations Cup.
Another concerning trend for India is its inability to keep clean sheets. India’s last clean sheet also came months ago when the Blue Tigers played a goalless draw against Afghanistan.
The offensive unit has failed to score goals badly as the Blue Tigers scored merely 4 goals in their last five games since clinching a bronze in Tajikistan. To pile on the misery, there are reports that Ryan Williams has been ruled out after a hamstring injury.
It seems even fate did not favour India after their equaliser was disallowed against Jamaica. But Khalid Jamil has previously been in the midst of an even more terrifying crisis.
The former Jamshedpur FC gaffer must find ways to propel India to a win over Zimbabwe and go home with a historic bronze in British soil.
Zimbabwe

From the latest FIFA rankings, it may seem like the African outfit is just a few spots above India. But in reality, they have some really good players who regularly compete in top European leagues and have won several accolades.
They are led by Kaitano Tembo, who took over the reins after former Liberia gaffer Mario Marinica parted ways. They are coming after winning the 2026 Four Nations Football Tournament, after Botswana and Zambia in the knockout rounds.
In their last meeting against an Asian side, they defeated the reigning Asian champions, Qatar, in Doha and would be keen to replicate the same against India tomorrow.
After all, they will eye their most anticipated revenge against India after the Blue Tigers thrashed Zimbabwe in the semi-finals of the 2003 Afro Asian Cup in Hyderabad in an eight-goal thriller.
Team News
Ryan Williams is likely to be out for India after picking up a hamstring injury against Jamaica.
Whereas Zimbabwe are expected to have a full fit squad for the match.

Players to Watchout
Lallianzuala Chhangte (India)

Mumbai City FC captain Lallianzuala Chhangte will have big responsibilities on his shoulders, especially in the absence of Ryan Williams upfront as India eyes a win in UK.
Whether it be taking on the might Qatari players in India’s FIFA World Cup qualifier rounds or playing a crucial role in helping India clinch a 2-1 win over Hong Kong, Chhangte has stood tall every time Khalid Jamil and the country looked up to him.
In the last game against Jamaica, he started on the wing but struggled for service as India suffered a 0-2 defeat, and Chhangte will be hoping to get the better of the Zimbabwe defence to help India take an early advantage in the game.
Jordan Zemura (Zimbabwe)

The Valley is a familiar venue for Zemura, who spent a year with Charlton Athletic early on in his career before making a move to AFC Bournemouth, where he led the club to promotion in the English Premier League.
He currently plays for the top Italian club Udinese Calcio and is coming after a good season, registering 19 appearances. What makes him an asset for Zimbabwe is his positional versatility, as he can play as a left wing-back apart from his traditional left midfield position.
He will be a dominating presence on the left flank for Zimbabwe in the upcoming encounter against India, where he eyes nothing but a bronze for the Warriors.
