[WATCH] Jithin MS sets Durand Cup group stages ablaze with his goals

Jithin MS has been in scintillating form in the competition.

NorthEast United FC qualified for the Durand Cup 2024 quarter-finals after an outstanding round of performances in the group stages. The Highlanders look completely galvanised as they scored 11 goals across three games and only conceded twice. 

Juan Pedro Benali’s men were hugely assisted by attacking stars Guillermo Fernandez and Jithin MS who contributed seven of those 11 goals. While the Spanish debutant has already racked up three goals, Jithin has been the Indian Super League(ISL) outfit’s best performer in the tournament.

The Indian forward has demonstrated his efficacy as a fox-in-the-box with his brace against Odisha FC in the Highlanders’ closing group stage fixture, which they won 5-1. Jithin has also become a threat drifting in from the left and frequently getting into threatening central positions. 

NorthEast United congratulated the two-time I-League-winning striker’s performances in a montage of his goals from the group stages that they posted on their social media handles. The nature of the strikes indicates that Jithin might have finally hit the ground running and might just win something for his side this season.

He will be vital for his side against Indian Army FT in the quarter-finals and can seriously hurt them. The attacker also notched an assist and is not selfish in opportune moments, meaning the likes of Guillermo and Alaeddine Ajaraie can profit from his movement and vision.

Benali also has a task ahead of the season, now that he has three performing attackers – figuring out a winning formula and getting the most out of all three of them.

He will be pleased with not only their contributions but the entire team’s willingness to maintain their defensive shape and plug the gaps with proper communication.

NorthEast United FC will hope to keep up their stellar run of results and finally add to their empty trophy cabinet this season, be it the Durand Cup, ISL League Winners’ Shield, ISL trophy, or the Super Cup.
