Top 10 youngsters to watch in I-League 2024-25

The league action is scheduled to kick off on Friday.

Ahead of the start of the new season, I-League 2024-25 promises to showcase some of the best young prospects in Indian football. Many of these players are expected to make an instant impact and lead their team’s respective campaigns this season.

As the teams enter the 18th season of the second division of Indian football, a lot of the young stars will be hoping to debut for their teams. While some players already on the list have some experience, some other names will be looking to hit the ground running immediately.

Here’s a look at ten rising stars who could dominate the league with their skills and potential.

10. Tangva Ragui (Midfielder, SC Bengaluru)

A technically sound midfielder hailing from Manipur, Ragui possesses excellent ball control and passing accuracy. The 20-year-old has showcased the ability to maintain possession and dictate play in the midfield.

Looking to build on their promotion from I-League 2 last season, SC Bengaluru will hope Ragui plays a crucial role in their league ambitions this season.

9. Akashdeep Singh (Forward, Namdhari FC)

A rising star known for his raw pace and clinical finishing, Singh is a player to watch out for this season. The 22-year-old attacker is a natural goal scorer and will play an instrumental role in leading Namdhari FC’s attack.

Following a ninth placed finish last season, the club will be hoping Singh’s attacking threat will help them make their mark in the league.

8. Lalremruata (Midfielder, Churchill Brothers)

A dynamic midfielder hailing from Mizoram, Lalremruata is known for his box-to-box play and physicality. His work ethic and ability to contribute defensively and offensively make him an indispensable part of Churchill Brothers’ midfield.

He has even deputed for his team as a defender at left-back, showcasing his versatility. It could be a huge asset for a club looking to improve on their 7th-placed finish.

7. Ronney Willson Kharbudon (Defender, Shillong Lajong)

The Meghalayan centre-back has shown immense defensive intelligence and his ability to read the game also stands out.

The 21-year-old showed a lot of quality while making five appearances in the Durand Cup and also scored a goal in the tournament. Kharbudon is known for his tackling and interceptions and will be expected to play a vital role in Shillong Lajong’s defensive setup.

6. Haobam Tomba Singh (Midfielder, Inter Kashi)

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder showed glimpses of his youth and promise for Inter Kashi in the Durand Cup. While playing limited minutes in the tournament, Singh made two appearances while scoring a goal in the process.

A creative playmaker with incredible vision and dribbling ability, Singh has shown a lot of promise in his cameos for Kashi. With an ability to unlock defenses with precise through balls, Tomba Singh will be pivotal for Inter Kashi’s offensive strategy.

5. R Lalbiakliana (Forward, Sreenidi Deccan)

The 20-year-old is a clinical forward with a knack for finding the back of the net. While he only made 3 appearances in Super Cup 2024, the Mizoram native has shown a lot of promise.

His speed and off-the-ball movement make him a nightmare for defenders and could be a hidden gem for Sreenidi this season. If there is one player who could be a breakout star in Sreenidi’s attack, Lalbiakliana is the man to watch.

4. Sandip Mandi (Defender, Inter Kashi)

Mandi is a calm and composed left-back who excels in excellent positioning and tackling skills. The West Bengal native has shown his ability to play out from the back and make marauding runs on the wings.

The 22-year-old left-back has experience representing India on the U-23 level which makes him a crucial figure in Inter Kashi’s defense.

3. Lalchungnunga Chhangte (Midfielder, Sreenidi Deccan)

The 23-year-old winger has shown tremendous tireless work rate and versatility makes him a standout player for Sreenidi Deccan.

Chhangte is equally adept at breaking up opposition play and launching attacks. The Mizo midfielder thrives under pressure and is one of the few players on this list with some experience playing in the Indian Super League (ISL). 

2. Devansh Dabas (Goalkeeper, Gokulam Kerala FC)

One of the most promising young goalkeepers in the league this season, Dabas is a player to watch out for this season. The Gokulam Kerala FC goalkeeper boasts sharp reflexes and a commanding presence in the box.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper from Muzaffarnagar is known for his quick decision-making and shot-stopping ability. All his qualities make him an asset for Gokulam Kerala’s defensive solidity if he is selected to start in goal this season.

1. Tharpuia (Midfielder, Gokulam Kerala FC)

The 22-year-old Mizo winger is a technically gifted player known for his exceptional passing range and vision. He possesses the ability to control the game’s tempo which makes him a crucial player for Gokulam Kerala FC.

Following his recent transfer from Aizawl FC, Tharpuia will be at the heart of their attacking transitions this season. While making 20 appearances for Aizwal FC last season, Tharpuia contributed three goals in attack.
