India failed to qualify for the 2025 AFC U-20 Asian Cup.

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have officially announced the pots and the new format for the qualifiers of the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup. The tournament is tentatively scheduled to take place in March-April 2027, with China set to host the competition.

The AFC had earlier confirmed a major change in the qualification format from this cycle onward, introducing a two-tier structure consisting of the qualification phase and the development phase.

Under the new format, the qualification phase will feature 32 teams divided into four pots, while the development phase will consist of 12 teams, also split across four pots.

Format of the tournament:

The 32 teams in the qualification phase will be divided into eight groups of four teams each. Teams within each group will face each other to determine qualification for the final tournament in China.

The eight group winners will qualify directly for the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup, while the seven best second-placed teams will also secure qualification spots. These 15 teams will join hosts China, who qualify automatically for the tournament as hosts.

Meanwhile, the eight bottom-placed teams from the qualification phase will be relegated to the development Phase for the next qualification cycle.

As for the development phase, the 12 participating teams are expected to be divided into three groups. The best-performing teams from this phase are likely to earn direct promotion to the qualification phase for the following cycle, allowing them to bypass the development phase and compete against stronger opposition in Asia.

The AFC introduced this format to reduce one-sided scorelines such as 13-0 or 15-0 victories, which have frequently occurred between top-ranked and lower-ranked nations in the past. The new system is expected to make qualification matches more competitive and exciting while also helping developing nations gain better technical exposure against teams of a similar level.
