Egypt demanded that Francois Letexier be expelled from the FIFA World Cup 2026.
French referee Francois Letexier has come under the spotlight following Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16. The Egyptian Football Federation (EFF) has reportedly filed an official complaint with FIFA, claiming several refereeing and VAR decisions had a direct impact on the outcome of the match.
Egypt looked set to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament after taking a two-goal lead before Lionel Messi inspired Argentina’s comeback. However, the African side were left furious after a series of controversial decisions, including a disallowed goal and a rejected penalty appeal.
Speaking after the match, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan questioned the officiating and said, “We deserved more from this game. The refereeing decisions changed everything.”
According to L’Equipe, Egypt has also requested that Francois Letexier and his officiating team should not be assigned any further matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026. However, the French publication reports that FIFA is unlikely to remove the referee solely because of the complaint.
Who is Francois Letexier?

At 37, Francois Letexier is regarded as one of the finest referees in world football.
The French official, who hails from Bédée in Brittany, made his Ligue 1 debut in 2016 before earning his FIFA badge a year later. Away from football, he works as a legal professional, but his rapid rise through the refereeing ranks has earned him appointments in some of the biggest matches in the sport.
Letexier officiated the 2023 UEFA Super Cup between Manchester City and Sevilla, served as fourth official in the 2024 UEFA Champions League final and was selected to referee the UEFA Euro 2024 final between Spain and England.
His reputation reached another high when the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) named him the World’s Best Referee for 2024.
That pedigree made him one of FIFA’s trusted officials heading into the FIFA World Cup 2026. However, one controversial evening against Egypt has suddenly placed him under intense scrutiny.

What decisions put Letexier under fire?

Egypt’s frustration centres around several key incidents rather than a single controversial call.
The first came in the opening half when Letexier awarded Argentina a penalty after Haissem Hassan challenged Nicolas Tagliafico inside the area. Although Lionel Messi failed to convert from the spot, Egypt felt similar fouls at the other end were not being judged with the same standard.
The biggest flashpoint arrived shortly after the hour mark.
Egypt believed they had doubled their advantage through Mostafa Ziko following a quick counterattack. However, VAR instructed Letexier to review an earlier incident in the move. After checking the pitchside monitor, he ruled that Marwan Attia had fouled Lisandro Martinez during the attacking phase, leading to the goal being disallowed.
While FIFA’s VAR protocol allows officials to review attacking offences before a goal, Egypt argued that the incident occurred too far back in the move and that VAR had gone searching for an infringement.
The controversy deepened in the closing stages when Egypt appealed for a penalty after Hamdy Fathy appeared to be pulled inside the box. Letexier waved play on, and moments later Argentina broke forward, with Enzo Fernandez scoring the winner.
Egypt also questioned whether there had been a foul in the build-up to Argentina’s decisive goal. Tempers flared after the final whistle, with Letexier issuing several yellow cards, including one to Hossam Hassan.
For Egypt, the issue is not one isolated decision but what they see as inconsistent use of VAR throughout the match.
Can Francois Letexier be banned from the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Despite Egypt’s official complaint, Francois Letexier is not facing an automatic suspension.
FIFA’s Referees Committee, rather than participating nations, decides which officials continue in the tournament. Egypt cannot veto a referee’s appointment or force FIFA to remove him.
Instead, Francois Letexier’s performance will undergo the same technical review applied after every FIFA World Cup match. Officials assess the referee’s decisions, reports from match observers and VAR footage before determining future appointments.
Another factor could also influence his chances of officiating later matches. FIFA traditionally avoids assigning referees from countries still represented in the competition. If France continue progressing deep into the tournament, Francois Letexier could naturally become unavailable for the latter stages.
Previous World Cup referee controversies
Calls to remove referees after controversial matches are not new.
One of the most famous examples came at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, when Italy heavily criticised Ecuadorian referee Byron Moreno after their Round of 16 defeat to South Korea. Moreno’s performance sparked widespread debate, and although FIFA never publicly linked the criticism to its decision, he did not officiate another match during that tournament.
History suggests, however, that complaints from national federations rarely lead directly to a referee’s dismissal. FIFA generally bases such decisions on internal performance assessments rather than public pressure.
Why has Egypt complained about referee Francois Letexier?
The Egyptian Football Federation has reportedly lodged a complaint with FIFA, claiming several key refereeing and VAR decisions influenced their 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.
What were the controversial decisions in Argentina vs Egypt?
The main flashpoints included Argentina’s penalty, the VAR review that ruled out Mostafa Ziko’s goal, Egypt’s denied penalty appeal and the build-up to Enzo Fernandez’s late winner.
Can FIFA ban Francois Letexier from the rest of the FIFA World Cup 2026?
Not automatically. FIFA’s Referees Committee reviews every official’s performance before deciding future appointments, and national associations cannot directly remove a referee.
