Watch: Chennaiyin 0-1 Mumbai City highlights
Chennaiyin FC
Karanjit Singh – 5.0
The 32-year-old Chennaiyin FC shot-stopper had made nine saves and conceded 11 goals in the ISL prior to this match. Singh was at fault for Mumbai City’s goal as he failed to completely clear Modou Sougou’s initial effort.
Francis Fernandes – 6.0
The right-back attacked his flank all game long, but was often caught out of position and was made to pay for it when Sougou exploited the space afforded to him to run onto a pass from midfield and eventually score the only goal of the game.
Jerry Lalrinzuala– 6.0
The left-back had a largely anonymous game, with no real attacking intent. He held his defensive position well, but looked jaded towards the end of the match. John Gregory would do well to afford him a rest.
Anirudh Thapa – 7.0
The 20-year-old was a star turn in what was a very ordinary Chennai side. With penetrating and purposeful runs into the heart of the opposition defence and smart, simple passes, the midfielder proved why he is one of Indian football’s brightest prospects.
Thoi Singh – 6.0
Thoi Singh had a largely anonymous game apart from an instance where he almost benefited from a Carlos Salom shot that fell to him after it hit the post. The winger failed to convert it, wrapping up a very unimpressive performance.
Issac Vanmalsawma– 6.0
Isaac was another one of Chennaiyin FC’s less effective players. The 22-year-old failed to make an impression before he was hauled off by John Gregory to be replaced by Nelson, who provided Chennaiyin with pace, purpose and trickery, everything that Isaac had failed to do.
Substitutions
Jeje Lalpekhlua – 5.5
Chennaiyin FC’s misfiring striker was brought on in the 79th minute to salvage a point for his side. He failed to do so and passed up yet another chance to improve on his confidence.
Germanpreet Singh– 6.5
The midfielder was brought onto the pitch to add steel and purpose to the Chennaiyin midfield, which he succeeded in doing. Nelson and Germanpreet’s introductions swung the game to Chennaiyin’s side and saw them almost draw level.

Mumbai City
Arminder Singh – 7.0
The Mumbai City goalkeeper impressed again as he kept a clean-sheet at the home of the champions. The 25-year-old crucially made himself big to deny Thoi Singh from drawing the home side level in the second half.
Subashish Bose– 7.5
The young left-back is blossoming this season in the ISL and proved it yet again against Chennaiyin. He nullified the tricky Thoi Singh and got forward himself to cause Francis Fernandes a world of problems. Bose continues to shine in games and is proving to be an invaluable asset to his side.
Joyner Lourenco– 6.5
The 27-year-old defender was making only his second appearance in the Indian Super League and looked solid throughout. The defender made several impressive blocks and nullified the Chennaiyin attack to a great extent.
Souvik Chakraborti– 6.5
Chakraborty has started every one of Mumbai’s games so far in the ISL and has grown into the season as it has progressed. He put in a very solid showing at left-back, but was left exposed on occasion when Gregory Nelson came on for the home side.
Sehnaj Singh– 8.0
Sehnaj took up position in front of the back four and was excellent all game long. He took Raphael Augusto and Anndrea Orlandi out of the game for most of the match because of his quick thinking and smart interceptions. The 25-year-old was one of his side’s standout players.
Milan Singh- 7.0
The midfielder put in another solid showing for Mumbai City. He was crucial to his side’s unquestionable midfield dominance for most of the game and is quickly becoming one of the first names on the team-sheet.
Substitutions
Mohammad Rafique– 6.5
Rafique replaced the goalscorer Sougou in the 79th minute in a move that was meant to shore up the Mumbai defence by adding an extra body in midfield. Rafique helped his side repel wave after wave of late Chennaiyin pressure to ensure that they got the victory.

The 29-year-old was brought on in the 66th minute to replace Milan Singh and he picked up where his compatriot had left off, by bossing proceedings in midfield and seeing out a very important victory for his side.
