ISL Indian TOTW 6: Sunil Chhetri, Harmanjot Singh Khabra, and Albino Gomes put in solid displays

The race for the playoffs has heated up, with the teams battling it out.

The Indian Super League saw some major shifts in the pack this week, as Bengaluru FC climbed up to the top of the table, with their third consecutive win on the road. Mumbai City also picked up an important win, while Chennaiyin FC thrashed a disappointing Pune City to gain their first success of the season. Prior to the Festival of Lights, some fireworks were created by our own domestic players.

Here’s our ISL Team of the Week for Gameweek 6:

Chhetri, Chhangte and Thoi are currently in good form this season

Goalkeeper: Albino Gomes (Delhi Dynamos)

The former Mumbai City keeper made his first appearance of the season, coming on for Fransisco Dorronsoro towards the end of the first half and made quite the impression.

He was made to work hard by a relentless Jamshedpur attack and stuck in to deny them a chance to humiliate his side. Gomes was ever-alert in making saves and denied the Men of Steel with some good stops in the second half.

Right-Back: Mohammad Dhot (Delhi Dynamos)

Dhot had a tough task ahead of him in containing the in-form Michael Soosairaj and actually did a great job in neutralizing his threat. The young defender replaced Pritam Kotal at right-back and had a game to remember, as he was industrial on his side and worked really hard.

Dhot ended up making nine clearances in the game, along with three tackles, a couple of interceptions and vital blocks as well.

Center-Back: Rahul Bheke (Bengaluru FC)

The 27-year-old put in a solid show in the Southern Derby

After a shaky start to the season, Rahul Bheke has seemingly found his form from last season and put on a solid show in the Southern Derby. Bheke did not let the nerves of the occasion get to him, as he he contained the Blasters' threat on his side really well. He later moved into center-back in the second half and preserved the Blues' lead amicably, being a strong figure in the middle.

Bheke made an amazing nine clearances in the whole game and was always in the right place at the right time to prevent danger.

Center-Back: Joyner Laurenco (Mumbai City)

Joyner Laurenco gave another solid account of himself in a difficult away fixture against defending champions Chennaiyin and actually earned a clean-sheet at the Marina Arena. The former Pune defender did a great job in containing Carlos Salon and much like his team, he was absolutely unbreakable defensively.

Laurenco worked really well with captain Lucian Goian to stop Chennaiyin’s relentless attacks, as he made nine clearances throughout the match to avert danger. Laurenco also made three important blocks to deny Chennaiyin a swipe at his goal and made things easier for Amrinder Singh, with another strong showing at the heart of the Islanders’ impressive defence.

Left-Back: Subhasish Bose (Mumbai City)

Subhasish Bose is turning out to be among Mumbai City’s best signings this season, as he’s putting in amazing performances at the back wee- in-week-out. The former Bengaluru FC left-back had another terrific game against Chennaiyin, in which he neutralized the threat of Thoi Singh on his wing and was dangerous going forward as well.

Bose was everywhere on the left flank, making challenges and always looking to avert any threat the defending champions tried to cause. He made seven clearances throughout the game, as well as three interceptions and three tackles to sum up an excellent, hard-working performance.

Right Central Midfield: Harmanjot Khabra (Bengaluru FC)

Harmanjot Khabra is a real asset for Bengaluru FC this season and is allowing them to dominate games in midfield. The versatile midfielder put in another commendable performance on the road and made sure to win the game against Kerala Blasters with conviction.

Khabra’s movement was really clever, as he got into some promising positions and didn’t let himself get pressed in. He had a passing accuracy of 76% and did well with his defensive duties, making two crucial blocks.

Central Midfield: Sehnaj Singh (Mumbai City)

One of the important reasons for Mumbai City pulling off the win was their impeccable midfield and Sehnaj Singh was at the heart of it. The former Mohun Bagan midfielder had a fantastic outing in Chennai, pulling the strings for his side sitting just ahead of his two central defenders.

Not only did Sehnaj have a fantastic passing accuracy of 81%, but the impeccable work he put in midfield helped neutralize the threat of Raphael Augusto and Andrea Orlandi.

Left Central-Midfield: Anirudh Thapa (Chennaiyin FC)

Thapa gave a strong performance against Mumbai City in which he had an 81% passing accuracy

The youngster had a really prolific week with Chennaiyin and played a big part in them gaining their first win of the season. Thapa was like a pocket of energy in Chenaniyin’s midfield in both games, often urging his teammates to pass to him and being ever-enthusiastic about creating chances.

He put in a really hard-working display against Pune City to help his side. Thapa put in three blocks, four tackles and two interceptions.

Right Wing: Thoi Singh (Chennaiyin FC)

Jeje Lalpekhlua might be finding it difficult to score this season, but Thoi Singh is making up for him with some really effective performances. After being frustrated by Mumbai, Thoi looked to pick up his game against the Stallions and made a big impact from the bench.

Ever since coming on, he looked dangerous on the right flank and caused big problems for Fanai. He wrapped up the game when he clinically got himself to Kamaljt’s rebound and coolly slotted into the net to earn three points for his side.

Left Wing: Lallianzuala Chhangte (Delhi Dynamos)

The Delhi Dynamos winger was on fire in the capital against the dangerous Jamshedpur, as he was always on the hunt to pounce on an error. Chhangte’s movement caused many problems for Jamshedpur’s defence, as he went past them and put in some promising crosses. He forced a horrible backpass from Jamshedpur and capitalized on their mistake to score his goal, which gave his team the equalizer.

He was also prominent in helping them go ahead, as it was his cross which caused all sorts of problems for Jamshedpur and eventually fell in the path of Adria Carmona to score.

Striker: Sunil Chhetri (Bengaluru FC)

Chhetri became the highest scoring Indian player in the ISL with his goal against the Blasters

Sunil Chhetri has been on some form for Bengaluru on the road this season and he continued his amazing work in the crucial Southern Derby as well. Chhetri reveled on the big occasion and drew first blood for his team, when he cleverly beat his man and coolly scored the goal.

Despite it being offside, Chhetri would definitely take the goal which helped the Blues maintain their early dominance in the game. The Blues captain continued his fine work later on, testing Naveen Kumar with some vicious shots on goal.
