This was only SCEB’s second clean-sheet of the 2021-22 season.

The quest for their maiden win of this Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 campaign continues, as SC East Bengal drew a blank against Mumbai City FC, despite being defensively formidable. Some may say that Renedy Singh’s men escaped a defeat due to incompetent refereeing, but it will SCEB’s solid performance that will steal the headlines. The historic club, under interim coach Singh, look like a new side, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

SC East Bengal’s coach shared his thoughts after tonight’s impressive draw.

Very proud of the team

This was another impressive display from the Red and Gold under interim coach Renedy Singh. “I’m really proud of the boys. We played with one foreigner, while they had four of their best playing. Even with Indian boys, along with Chima and Darren (Sidoel) towards the end. This was a top performance, but we could have done better with the ball,” rejoiced a proud Renedy.

Learnings from this match

Despite failing to get their first win of the campaign once again, there are a lot of positives to take back from tonight’s draw. “Mumbai is the best attacking side in the league and in spite of that, we defended very well. We could have nicked the match towards the end,” Singh reflected on tonight’s performance.

On problems in attack

While the rejuvenated SCEB side look solid defensively, they are still lacking in goals. A alone Daniel Chima upfront is not proving to be sufficient for the Kolkata-based club. “I had only 6-7 days to work with the boys. To play a good attacking game we need top quality players with technique,” commented the coach on lack of attacking prowess.

“Without the ball they defended well and we need to continue doing that in the next match. We need to regroup, defend better and go for the attack. It was good seeing Balwant (Singh), Jackichand (Singh) and Darren come back from injuries, but there are a couple of foreigners who are still injured,” the interim coach signed off.
