Dimitri Petratos played a crucial role for Mohun Bagan last season.
Mohun Bagan have confirmed that their star forward Dimitri Petratos has signed a new two-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2026. The Australian star’s initial contract ended in May, but it’s clear that the two parties worked to find an agreement over a new extension.
Dimitri Petratos was arguably Mohun Bagan’s best player in the 2023-24 season. He won the Indian Super League (ISL) Golden Ball award for having scored 10 goals and providing seven assists across all competitions. He helped the Mariners win their first-ever ISL Shield championship and also scored the winner in their 2023 Durand Cup final win over East Bengal.
The Kolkata heavyweights were keen on holding onto Petratos even after signing Australian forward Jamie Maclaren in the summer window. The 31-year-old will now be able to link up with his fellow countrymen Maclaren and Jason Cummings to create a formidable frontline for Mohun Bagan and help them strongly compete in the ISL and AFC Champions League 2 next season.
What did Petratos say about his contract extension?
The 31-year-old forward is delighted at extending his contract with Mohun Bagan after growing deeply attached to the club over the last few years. Speaking to their media team on his emotions after signing the contract, Dimitri Petratos revealed: “I’m proud that the Mohun Bagan management have high aspirations from me. I will try my best to ensure that the club wins more major trophies.
“This year, our squad is way stronger than it was last season. My good friend Jamie Maclaren has joined the squad and we both have played a lot of matches together (at Brisbane Roar) and have been successful together. We want to bring that success to Indian football. I’m also pleased to see a quality player like Greg Stewart join Mohun Bagan.
“Our defence has also been strengthened by Tom Aldred and Alberto Rodriguez’s inclusions. So our capability of challenging for major trophies has further increased. Just like last season, we’ll succeed as one strong unit in the upcoming campaign, I’m pretty sure about. That’s my promise to the supporters. But we need their support more than ever. Joy Mohun Bagan,” Dimitri Petratos added.
What has Dimitri Petratos achieved at Mohun Bagan so far?
The Mariners brought Dimitri Petratos onboard to the club in 2022. He has since proven to be an overwhelming success for the club. The 31-year-old has been an ideal team player, being able to operate in different roles. He was initially roped in as a centre-forward but has also excelled in a no.10 role in the past few years.
Petratos made an immediate impact after coming on at Mohun Bagan in the 2022/23 season. He helped them win the 2022/23 ISL title after defeating Bengaluru FC in the final, scoring a brace in that game. He scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in that campaign, winning the Mohun Bagan Best Striker award in 2023 too.
The 31-year-old got even better in the 2023/24 season. He helped guide the Mariners to the ISL League title and had 17 goal contributions (10 goals, seven assists) in the ISL. Petratos, who was part of Australia’s 2018 FIFA World Cup squad, has proven to be an inspired attacking figure for Mohun Bagan.
He’s scored in the majority of big games, including in the last three ISL Kolkata Derbies against East Bengal. Despite competition from new foreigners like Stewart and Maclaren, Petratos is expected to be a regular starter for Mohun Bagan because of his sheer influence, creative output and goal-scoring instinct. He’ll look to help them start the season strongly by winning the Durand Cup, before helping go far into the ACL 2 and retain their ISL championship.
