Luka Majcen played a crucial role for Punjab FC in ISL 2023-24.

In a surprising move, Punjab FC are set to re-sign Luka Majcen on a one-year deal, just months after releasing him following the completion of his contract last season. A source close to the club informed Khel Now of the agreement, which is expected to be announced soon.

“Luka’s experience and leadership is invaluable to the club,” said a source close to the club. “He knows the team and the league well and the club are confident he’ll make an immediate impact.”

Luka Majcen was the captain of Punjab FC in their debut season in the Indian Super League (ISL). Despite the team failing to qualify for the playoffs, he had an impressive individual season. He scored eight goals and provided two assists, showcasing his experience and leadership qualities.

The Slovenian striker has been plying his trade in Indian football for the last four seasons. He is only the third foreigner after Dudu Omagbemi and Katsumi Yusa to have played in the top three tiers of Indian Football. The 35-year-old has a brilliant history with Punjab FC, having previously spent two seasons with the club.

In his first season, he was instrumental in helping the team get promoted to the ISL, scoring 16 goals and winning the I-League Golden Boot in the process. He was one of the mainstays of the team and his leadership played a crucial role in their success.

Majcen’s return to Punjab FC marks a second overseas signing for the Shers after acquiring Filip Mrzljak as their first overseas signing for the club. The Punjab-based outfit are undergoing a major overhaul under new head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis.
