The Black Cats were held by the Railwaymen in Poland.

Sunderland travelled to the Stadion Poznań to take on Lech Poznan in a league phase fixture of the UEFA Europa League 2026-27 on Thursday night. Tumir Tutierov’s opener was cancelled by a goal from Leo Bengtsson, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

The visitors took the lead in the second minute, with Timur Tutierov converting Nilson Angulo’s cross after a mistake in possession by goalkeeper Mateusz Lis. The Black Cats continued to dominate possession and create chances but failed to make most of them.

Both sides continued to create chances in the second half as well, and Lech Poznan were rewarded for their perseverance when Leo Bengtsson found the back of the net in the 70th minute with a low strike.

This salvaged a crucial draw for Lech Poznan, who held on for the first points of this season’s Europa League campaign.

Five things we learned from Lech Poznan vs Sunderland match:

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

1. Changes work for Le Bris

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris made six changes in his starting lineup from the 2-0 Premier League loss to Bournemouth. Only Kevin Danso, Robin Roefs, Nordi Mukiele, Granit Xhaka, and Timur Tutierov kept their places in the team.

Most of the players called in by the head coach starred tonight. Nilson Angulo set up the first goal, while Luke O’Nien marshalled the defence against a spirited Lech Poznan attack. Habib Diarra and Malick Fofana were also lively up the pitch in the first half.

2. Goalie error gives Black Cats breakthrough

Sunderland needed just two minutes to take the lead against Lech Poznan, and it was a complete harakiri from the Polish hosts. The ball was played back to goalkeeper Mateusz Lis.

Under no pressure, the Poznan custodian played a short pass towards his defence that was intercepted by Nilson Angulo, whose cross was gladly headed into the back of the net by Timur Tutierov. It marked the first goal for the Ukrainian striker, but the credit must go to the opposing goalkeeper.

3. Fofana’s dry streak continues

The Europa League used to be a favourite for Malick Fofana, who had scored six goals and registered one assist in his first eight matches in the tournament. However, in his last eight continental games, he has failed to register a single goal contribution.

Tonight, the Belgian youngster had several attempts, including a couple on target, but he failed to beat Lis and end his dry streak.

4. Black Cats fail to bury match

After the opening goal came from a defensive error, Sunderland created several chances with their fluent football. They had an astonishing 14 shots in the first half alone, eight of which were on target.

Three of those chances were classified as ‘big chances’; aside from Tutierov’s opening goal, the Black Cats failed to convert the others. As a result, they went into half-time just one goal ahead, when they could have easily killed the game by that point.

In total, Sunderland had 25 shots, with 11 of them on target. Yet, they could not get a second goal and had to come away from Poland with just a draw.

5. Hosts mount comeback

Despite coming into the match after back-to-back 4-0 losses in the tournament, Lech Poznan dug deep to come back against Sunderland. They had two big chances in the opening hour but failed to make them count.

Patrik Wålemark had the first chance just moments after the Black Cats scored the opener, but Robin Roefs saved his weak shot. The goalkeeper had to do better to deny Antoni Kozubal, whose point-blank header should have levelled the score.

Leo Bengtsson finally broke the deadlock in the 70th minute, and Michał Gurgul had the chance to put his side ahead, but Roefs denied him. Niels Frederiksen will be disappointed to have dropped two points tonight, but it marked an incredible turnaround for a team that started the match at the bottom of the table.
