Five reasons why Milan Skriniar is perfect for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)
The defender is close to signing for the Parisians.
Paris Saint-Germain is heading into a new era. There are talks of building a strong team rather than bringing in superstars. Furthermore, the club is making smart moves in the market. They shrugged off Real Madrid’s pursuit of Kylian Mbappe by signing a lucrative contract extension with him. Mauricio Pochhetino is also heading out of the club in the coming days after failing to deliver a European trophy. One of the players that could arrive at the Ligue 1 champions is Milan Skriniar. The centre-back is one of the main targets for PSG in the ongoing summer transfer window. A revamp in the squad is on the cards with several players also linked with moves away. When it comes to quality defenders in Europe, Skriniar is always part of the discussion.
One can expect PSG to launch an even stronger bid to finally win the UEFA Champions League during the 2022-23 season. To that end, they will bring in quality players, including Skriniar and here are five reasons why he is perfect for them.
Replacement for Presnel Kimpembe
While Milan Skriniar’s arrival is yet to be completed, it seems that the player he will replace is Presnel Kimpembe. Several reports out of France claimed that Paris Saint-Germain is listening to offers for the defender as he is not part of the plan for the forthcoming season.
The 26-year-old will become surplus to the requirement if and when Skriniar joins the club. There are players like Sergio Ramos, Marquinhos and Thilo Kehrer already in the centre-back position. This effectively pushes Kimpembe down the pecking order.
More squad depth
In order to win the UEFA Champions League, every team must have depth. Paris Saint-Germain has at least two world-class players for every position and they can efficiently rotate them to keep performing at a high level. Winning the domestic league and cup is the minimum requirement at the club.
Therefore, to win the Ligue 1 and have a strong chance of winning the UCL, PSG needs incredible squad depth. Milan Skriniar is therefore perfect for the club in the sense that he adds even more quality in a key area. The Parisians already have highly experienced players like Sergio Ramos and Marquinhos in the centre-back position. Adding Skriniar to the mix will be like adding an extra layer of cement on the wall.
Asking price is not an obstacle
Inter Milan is reluctant to let go of their star defender. However, their dwindling financial situation could persuade them to sell Milan Skriniar. Initial contacts between PSG and Inter saw the Serie A outfit demand €90m for the Slovakian. This amount itself is not an obstacle for the Ligue 1 outfit that has a history of making big-money signings.
Although, thanks to PSG’s persistence, Inter Milan reportedly will agree to sell Milan Skriniar for a figure in the region of €65m plus add-ons. This will be perfect for PSG’s transfer plans as they look toward signing more players. Among the targets is Renato Sanches who will bolster the squad for the upcoming season.
Longevity of the defender
One of the key benefits of having Milan Skriniar in the squad is the defender’s longevity. In the last two seasons, the centre-back has only missed five games for Inter Milan. It was due to being positive for coronavirus that the defender was unavailable for five games.
Having a reliable option at the heart of the defence is absolutely vital. Despite Sergio Ramos and his quality, his injury record of late has been worrying. He missed 33 games last season due to muscular problems and a calf issue. With Skriniar’s arrival, there will be consistency at the back.
Potential partnerships at the back
Milan Skriniar’s potential arrival at the club makes for a very exciting prospect. The Slovakian international could forge an incredible partnership at the back with Sergio Ramos and Marquinhos. Such a rock-solid pairing at the back will be tough for any opposition to break.
This makes PSG even more threatening in the attack. Players like Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar are leading the forward line. With defensive solidity at the back brought by the inclusion of Skriniar and co, these forwards can go all out and demolish opposition defence with more freedom.
