Lionel Messi has spent most of his summer participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026 for Argentina.
Messi scored eight goals and assisted four times at the World Cup, leading Argentina on a spectacular journey to the final that included some incredible comebacks.
Messi was left unhappy in what could have been his final World Cup appearance. His nation fell to Spain in the final.
The former FC Barcelona player has subsequently spent the previous several weeks on vacation; therefore, he has been unavailable for Inter Miami.
Messi resided the previous week in his native town of Rosario, Argentina. His 68-year-old father, Jorge, was waiting for him in Rosario. There, the family had revealed that he was receiving medical treatment for an unexplained ailment throughout the World Cup.
Lionel Messi arrived at Inter Miami on Wednesday, 10 days after Argentina’s World Cup final loss to Spain in extra time.
Lionel Messi set to return to action for Inter Miami in Leagues Cup
Miami released a snapshot of Messi returning to the club’s training facilities in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There, the 39-year-old exercised at 100% on Wednesday.
“Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami’s training sessions. He arrived around 5 AM in Fort Lauderdale and shortly afterwards was at the club’s headquarters. He would be at 100% and available for the debut in Leagues Cup against Atletico San Luis,” Reporter Jose Armando said.
Before Messi returns to the pitch, Inter Miami will face the Columbus Crew this weekend.
Miami enter the new round of MLS games ranked second in the Eastern Conference, two points below league leaders Nashville. They’re also eight points ahead of third-place New England, who have one game in hand.
