Chennaiyin had an impressive first half, and although the second half was largely a shadow of the first 45 minutes, it was definitely better than their performance against Dynamos. Materazzi's bold team selection has paid off, and the fan favourties in Kerr and Mendy will need to impress him during training to ever replace the impressive Eli Sabia and Karanjit.
Goa are still in search of their first win of the campaign, and their chances of qualifying for the knock-out stages have become slimmer.
It's full time. Chennaiyin finally register their first win of the campaign.
90+4' Romeo Fernandes outruns Riise, but the former Liverpool defender's supreme technique means Chennaiyin have the ball
90+3' Tavora sends in yet another Goa cross into the Chennaiyin 18-yard-box, but Karanjit catches it again.
90+2' It looked as though Trinadade had pulled his hamstring, but he plays on
90+1' Four minutes added.
90' The final minute of normal time. Goa still have not given up despite their two-goal deficit. Chennaiyin, despite ousting them, should learn a lesson or two from Zico's men.
88' Lalrinzuala gives away a corner. Tavora takes it, but Karanjit catches it. Perhaps, Duwayne Kerr's season is over.
86' SUBSTITUTION: Raphael Augusto limps off the pitch as Harmanjot Singh Khabra replaces him.
85' It is now Raphael Augusto's turn to down (for the second time). Between injuries to his first team players and a win, Materazzi would have definitely chosen the latter, but he could now only take off the Brazilian.
84' Wadoo tries to find Dudu after exchanging passes with Rane, but Kattimani comes off his line to collect the ball.
82' Dudu wins a corner after a scuffle with Dumas.
80' Cardozo accidentally trips Rane, but Sahni confronts the Brazilian only to go down grabbing his head despite the contact being only minimal.
78' Dudu finds Rane near the edge of the box, and the former Indian youth international controls the ball superbly to find Mulder, who had enough space and time to have a shot on target. He instead chooses to release Sahni, who only hits the side netting.
77' After seeing Chennaiyin hoof the ball up to Dudu for the better part of the Dynamos game, it is delightful to watch them play beautiful possession football.
76' SUBSTITUTION: Reinaldo goes off for Indian midfielder Romeo Fernandes.
75' SUBSTITUTION: Dudu replaces Succi. Despite not scoring, the Italian had been influential throughout the game. If it were not for Mulder's poor passing ability, he would have bagged an assist or two. He should keep his place.
74' Wadoo is down. The Chennaiyin medical team have had a busy day.
73' Rane takes the freekick he won but fails to find a man in blue shirt in the penalty box.
71' Lalrinzuala brings down Trindade. Richarlyson takes the resulting free kick, and his curling cross goes out of play.
70' Hanghal replaces Blasi. The Italian has had a solid performance in front of the defence and will likely keep his place.
68' Riise almost concedes an own goal but is lucky to see the ball go for a corner. Julio Cesar takes the corner kick. Goa looked as though they were close to scoring but Chennaiyin avert the danger.
67' Trindade and Rane collide nastily but, thankfully, both get right back up
65' Tavora is downed by Riise, and the duo enter an argument, but the referee is oblivious of it as he walks in the other direction.
64' SUBSTITUTION; Julio Cesar finally comes on for Jofre, after waiting near the sidelines for three minutes. Jofre had his chances, but the Brazilian has definitely had better games.
62' Mulder and Succi combine superbly, but Dumas depossesses the former.
61' Richarlyson downs Succi, and the medics come out for the second time. Goa are frustrated.
59' Rane takes the corner kick. Gaikwad gives away another. Rane's second corner in the minute is cleared.
58' Wadoo sends in a cross, but Balmuchu heads it clear for a corner.
56' Richarlyson tries his luck from 40 yard out, but his effort is deflected for a corner.
54' Gaikwad prepares himself for a cross, but Lalrinzuala launches an inch-perfect tackle.
52' Eli Sabia takes the resulting free-kick, and his effort is parried away by the Dynamos defence. Dynamos attempt a counter in vain.
51' Trindade brings down Succi, but the Italian retaliates. Definitely a headline-worthy moment.
50' The game has become physical, with players from either team tackling as frequently as they pass.
48' Corner for Goa. Trindade send in the cross, but Sahni does well to deal with it. Goa somehow pounced at the ball only for Coelho to hit the side netting.
47' Reinaldo brings dwon Eli Sabia with a tackle from the behind, but the referee only warsn the Brazilian.
46' Second half is underway.
SUBSTITUTION FOR FC GOA: Richarson replaces Lucio.
HALF TIME: The crowd shows their appreciation for the home side. Despite the fans turning up in fewer numbers than they did for the Dynamos game, they have been loud so far.
With a two-goal advantage, Chennaiyin have secured all but three points, and all they need to now do is hold on to their lead, but Materazzi will likely love to bounce back gloriously with a rout of Goa.
45' One minute has been added.
45' Karanjit parries away a superb cross from Cardozo and Chennaiyin remain in full control. The fans are loving it, maggle!
42' Joffre goes down rather easily in the box, and the ball falls onto the feet of Coelho, whose curling effort sails inches over the bar.
40' Rane has had little to do in the attacking third but has been an important player for Materazzi's men, effectively filling the space Lalrinzuala leaves behind.
38' Our editor Mrunal Nakashe wants to bid adieu to last season's finalists in Goa. Zico is not a happy man.
37' Cardozo sends in a cross, but Karanjit has no difficulty in catching it.
35' Joffrey attempts a cros, but today's hero Eli Sabia pulls off a block.
34' Dudu is warming up. Perhaps, Raphael is on his way out.
33' Cardoza finds Tavora near the 18-yeard-box, but a poor first touch from the latter results in a goal kick.
31' Raphael Augusto is down. He is being treated by the medics.
30' Karanjit produces the first save of the game. He has been untested so far thanks to some brilliant defending from the Super Machans.
29' Coelho goes down right in front of the penalty area, but the referee shrugs off his freekick request.
26' GOOOALLLL!!!! WADOO INCREASES THE LEAD FOR HOST.
Wadoo tries his luck from outside the box, and effort beats Kattimani, courtesy of a mild deflection. Chennaiyin are on fire.
23' Chennaiyin have nine outfield players behind the ball, and Goa are finding breaking down the Chennaiyin defence difficult although they have been able to retain possession.
21' Succi clears, but Goa are reluctant to track back as they win another corner. Joffre takes it this time, from the left. Augusto makes the clearance, but the ball refuses to leave the Chennaiyin half.
20' Corner for Goa. Trindade takes it.
19' Materazzi twice spoke about defending as a unit and attacking as a unit. His personnel are doing just that, and mistakes were a rarity in the first 20 minutes of the game.
17' Lalrinzuala sprints like his life is dependent on it. He often leaves a lot of space behind, but Rane does enough to make up for the teenager's enthusiasm.
15' GOOALLL!!!! MULDER SCORED FOR CHENNAI. Mulder finds the lead after a few exquisite passes from the home side. Goa offered a lot of space for the Dutchman for him to pass the ball into the net from outside the box.
14' Mulder has been wasteful so far, with the midfielder killing a Chennaiyin counter with yet another loss of possession.
12' The chemistry between Sahni and Augusto has been impeccable so far, with Rane seemingly invisible.
11' Wadoo, Augusto, Sahni, and Sahni combine to find Mulder in front of the penalty area with sublime one touch passing, but Lucio steals possession from the Dutchman.
10' Joffre finds a little time on the ball after the Gaurs hoof the ball up, but Eli Sabia makes the save for the home side.
7' Eli Sabia's reading has been impeccable so far, and his positioning only makes him a bigger menace for Goa.
6' Mulder and Augusto have been bossing the midfield, with the latter being the primary source of creativity for the home side.
4' Eli Sabia has already made an impact, keeping out Reinaldo thanks to his height. Fan favourtie Mendy may need to up his game if the Brazilian defender keeps up his performance throughout the game.
3' Goa have already begun troubling the home side's defence, and they need to wake up already.
2' Reinaldo was brought down in the penalty box, but the referee points to a corner kick.
1' Wadoo tries to find Augusto, but Kattimani rescues the ball for Goa.
It's kick-off. Succi and Raphael Augusto are getting things started for Chennaiyin. Succi will hope to make an impression after being demoted to the bench in the Dynamos game.
6:58 pm The teams are heading through the tunnel, with Wadoo skippering the home side and Brazil legend and Goa's marquee player leading the men in white.
6:56 pm There are more empty seats than there were in the first home game. With less than 10 minutes left until kick-off, it remains to be seen whether Chennaiyin can bring in as many spectators — or customers as West Ham United would put it — for the second game.
6:55 pm Goa have hardly made changes to their line-up, with only Dom Sahiln Tavora replacing Balmuchu from the previous game. Coach Zico stands by his team, as he stated in the pre-match press conference.
FC Goa lineup:Laxmikanth Kattimani(GK), Lucio(C), Rafael Dumas, Raju Gaikwad, Fulganco Cardozo, Sanjay Balmuchu, Trindade Goncalves, Sahil Tavora, Joffre Mateu Gonzalez, Reinaldo Da Cruz Oliveira, Rafael Coelho Luiz.
6:44 pm Materazzi claimed his side are less than hundred percent confident going into the third game of the campaign whilst his Goa counterpart stated an injection of confidence would help them return to winning ways.
6:43 pm Marco Materazzi has made wholesale changes to the squad with Davide Succi, Manuele Blasi, Eli Sabia, and Karanjit all making the starting line-up.
Chennaiyin FC lineup: Karanjit Singh(GK), John Arne Riise, Eli Sabiá, Mehrajuddin Wadoo(C), Jerry Lalrinzuala, Hans Mulder, Manuele Blasi, Raphael Augusto, Baljit Sahni, Davide Succi, Jayesh Rane.
6:43 pm Teenger Jerry Lalrinzuala has been handed a start, with Nallappan Mohanraj dropping to the bench after two underwhelming performances.
6:42 pm Both Dudu Omagbemi and Davide Succi are training, and it remains to be seen who partners Jeje Lalpekhlua up front. The line-ups should be out shortly.
6:40 pm Neither side have any serious injury concern, with the home side welcoming back Dhanachandra Singh, whose absence has been profound, given the presence of Nallappan Mohanraj. The Gaurs welcome back striker Robin Singh and goalkeeper Subhasish Chowdhury.
6:35 pm Goa, on the other hand, are heading into today's game after losing two consecutive games against high-flying NorthEast United and Pune City.
6:33 pm Tonight's match is essentially a replay of last season's finals that saw Chennaiyin come from behind to win 3-2, thereby lifting the Indian Super League title in its second year of existence.
6:31 pm Chennaiyin are coming off a draw — with former champions Atletico de Kolkata — on the opening day and a home defeat to Delhi Dynamos a week ago
