Eddie Howe might soon be seen in the United dugout!
Michael Carrick’s tenure at the helm of Manchester United has been rocky at best, with the former midfielder overseeing the club’s worst start to a Premier League season. A 3-0 thrashing at home at the hands of Bournemouth has left the Red Devils in 16th place with just seven points.
For now, Carrick is expected to continue as head coach, with the 45-year-old overseeing team training on Tuesday. He also retains the support of most of the Manchester United fans, who have directed their anger at Director of Football Jason Wilcox.
Despite this, the United hierarchy are reportedly on the hunt for a new head coach should they decide to sack Michael Carrick mid-season.
Several names have been linked, including Julian Nagelsmann and Unai Emery, but one clear favourite has now emerged in the form of former Bournemouth and Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe.

According to United insider Ross Harwood, the club are reportedly “getting closer” to an agreement with Eddie Howe.
This was also reported earlier by The Athletic, which said that Howe remained ‘high in the thoughts’ of the United hierarchy. However, the report also mentioned that the underwhelming end to his Newcastle tenure has given rise to some hesitation in his appointment.
Howe left Newcastle voluntarily a few days before the start of the new season, citing physical and mental exhaustion. He had earlier ended the Magpies’ 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025. He also secured qualification to the UEFA Champions League twice.
The Guardian reported that United could have to pay Newcastle around £3 million in compensation to appoint Howe. The report also stated that Howe is Wilcox’s preferred candidate, while Julian Nagelsmann is favoured by United’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell.
