John Stones becomes the latest addition to the City injury list
During this international break, John Stones and Kyle Walker were both forced off with injuries sustained while serving with England; both players, along with Manuel Akanji, are a doubt for Manchester City’s title-race match against Arsenal at the Etihad on Sunday.
With Manchester City’s crucial Premier League matchup with Arsenal, on Tuesday, John Stones hobbled off hurt early in England’s match against Belgium. At Wembley, the City defender was substituted by Joe Gomez after nine minutes of play. It’s a setback for Man City manager Pep Guardiola, who suffered another blow when Kyle Walker, one of his defenders, had to come out of the game during England’s friendly against Brazil on Saturday. Manuel Akanji, the centre-back, also pulled out of Switzerland’s team due to an injury.
Stones, Walker, and Akanji are now questionable for Sunday’s matchup between the Premier League rivals at Etihad Stadium.
During the press conference held after the match, England manager Gareth Southgate was questioned about whether he regretted starting Stones, who had participated in the entire ninety minutes of England’s loss to Brazil on Saturday:
“The first game wasn’t a game which was a high level in terms of intensity. We’ve done exactly what Holland did with Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake and what Norway did with Martin Odegaard and Erling Haaland. It only seems to fall on us when there’s a question on that.

“Of course, we’re disappointed if he’s got a problem. It looks like it’s in the abductor area. He came in on the back of not playing for two weeks, so it’s not about overload. But I hate sending players back to their clubs injured.”
