Mohamed Salah left out of Egypt’s national team squad

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool was unexpectedly dropped out of Egypt’s team for the upcoming international friendlies.

After suffering a hamstring injury in the first half of the Africa Cup of Nations match against Ghana on January 18, the 31-year-old had to leave the competition early. He later returned to the sidelines in mid-February against Brentford due to what manager Jurgen Klopp described as muscular tiredness

This week, Salah went back to training, and on Thursday, in their 5-1 thumping of Sparta Prague in the Europa League, he came off the bench.

With 19 goals this season, Liverpool’s top scorer has ignited a club-versus-country controversy. Egypt had previously turned down Liverpool’s request to have their captain excluded from the competition in Abu Dhabi, meaning they will play New Zealand before facing either Tunisia or Croatia in the championship match.

Prior to now, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp acknowledged:

“Two games with Egypt is really not up to me. We want to be careful, we have to be careful, but we’re in the middle of a super-intense period of the season and we need everyone.”

But now that Salah has been left out of the Egyptian Football Association’s Sunday squad announcement, he may stay with Liverpool and and preapare for the championship game.
