The Red Devils were thrashed at home by the Cherries.
Manchester United took on AFC Bournemouth in a Matchday 8 fixture of the Premier League 2026-27 at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier, and Evanilson secured a 3-0 win for the Cherries.
After a bright start to the contest, Bournemouth took the lead in the 38th minute when Rayan found the bottom corner with a fine finish from a set-piece situation. Marcus Tavernier then doubled the Cherries’ lead in the 43rd minute, capitalising on a defensive mistake.
Evanilson found the back of the net seconds after the restart, although it was ruled out for offside. Rayan also had a good opportunity to score a third goal, but his shot was saved by Senne Lammens.
Evanilson eventually scored the third goal of the night with a brilliant finish in the 71st minute. That goal completed the rout for the visitors, who secured a historic victory at Old Trafford.
Five things we learned from the Manchester United vs Bournemouth match:
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
1. Carrick’s tactical tweak backfires

Michael Carrick made a slight tactical change to how Manchester United shaped up for today’s match. The hosts seemed to line up with three players in the back, with skipper Harry Maguire pushing up in midfield when his side had the ball.
Diogo Dalot was also pushed inwards, making United’s shape really narrow. This provided lots of space to Marcus Tavernier and Rayan when the Cherries had the ball. It was also responsible for the visitors’ bright start.
2. Cherries wingers excel early
Fresh from a big win against AC Milan in the UEFA Europa League, Bournemouth started today’s match on the front foot. The Cherries got a lot of joy down the flanks, owing to their opponents’ narrow shape.
It was Rayan who gave his side the lead in the 38th minute, finding himself completely unmarked in the box from a set-piece situation before slotting the ball at the near post. Tavernier scored the second goal, although it was the result of a defensive howler from Leny Yoro.
3. Schoolboy errors hurt United
More than Bournemouth being at their best, the opening two goals exposed everything wrong with Manchester United at the moment. Both were moments of poor decision-making and amateurish defending from the Red Devils.
First, Ayden Heaven came sliding in, studs up, at Evanilson, conceding a needless free-kick. That free-kick was floated in towards Rayan at the back post, who was not marked by a single United player. With time and space to exploit, all the Bournemouth winger had to do was direct the ball towards goal.
The second goal was even more embarrassing, with Leny Yoro slipping while walking back towards his goalkeeper. Adrien Truffert won possession and cut it back for Marcus Tavernier, who scored into an empty net.
The third goal was also the result of a mistake, this time by Senne Lammens. The goalkeeper misjudged a pass from Lewis Cook and came sliding out. Evanilson comfortably got past him and rolled the ball into an empty net.
4. Tielemans, Mbeumo disappoint

Bruno Fernandes being dropped to the bench was one of the biggest calls of Carrick’s career, as the Portuguese midfielder had long been the team’s chief creator. His place was taken by Youri Tielemans, but the former Aston Villa player had a disappointing outing.
The Belgian lost possession in dangerous areas more than once in the opening stages, putting his side under pressure. He covered the most distance in a red shirt, but much of it was spent chasing the ball. He also earned a needless yellow card for pulling down Rayan. He was replaced at half-time by Matheus Cunha.
Similarly, Bryan Mbeumo put in a horrible shift in the first half, being dispossessed more times (2) than having touches in the opposition’s box (1). He did have a decent chance before half-time, but his effort was straight at Djordje Petrovic, who had little trouble parrying it behind for a corner.
5. Sacked in the morning… surely?
Chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” rang around Old Trafford as soon as the first goal went in, and it frankly looks difficult to envisage how Michael Carrick remains at the helm of Manchester United when they visit Chelsea.
The Stretford End did voice their support for the under-fire head coach, but it seems like a question of when, not if, Carrick will lose his job.
The Red Devils had already made their worst start to a Premier League season since 1986-87. It has just gotten a whole lot worse. Tonight’s defeat to a team in the bottom four will surely make Carrick’s job untenable.
