The Red Dragons stun Michael Carrick’s men ahead of the new season!

In a pre-season friendly contest, the English Premier League side Manchester United went head-to-head against the EFL Championship club Wrexham AFC. This interesting contest took place at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in Poland.

Right now, it is all about building up the fitness levels of the players ahead of the new season. Neither of these sides backed down till the very end. It was surely not an easy contest for any of these clubs.

Led by Michael Carrick, Manchester United will take on the newly promoted Hull City in their first fixture of the Premier League 2026-27 season. The result is not what they were looking for, but it surely gave them an idea of what they should be doing right.

It can be considered a big win for Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham. Despite underperforming in their last two fixtures, they made fewer mistakes this game and it ended in a positive way for them.

Important things we learned from this match:

1. New tactical approach by Michael Carrick

It was now the first game for Michel Carrick as the permanent manager of Manchester United. The squad saw a heavy alteration due to World Cup absences. Carrick prioritised structural discipline and, later, heavy rotation. Manchester United might have kept the majority of the ball possession, but their performance with the current lineup in the final third remains a work in progress.

2. Sam Smith to the rescue

Things were looking decent enough for both clubs until Sam Smith helped Wrexham AFC take a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute. It can be considered a goal out of nothing. This instantly piled up a lot of pressure on Man United, who took part in their first pre-season game. Lewis O’Brien delivered an excellent ball to Smith, who did not make any mistakes. This goal led Wrexham to a win.

3. Man United’s youngsters gain valuable minutes

Despite a result they were not looking for, there were a lot of things which were beneficial for Manchester United in this fixture. One of the most important remains the minutes that youngsters got on the field. Michael Carrick did not hesitate and made a heavy rotation. Jacob Devaney and Harry Amass looked good in their respective roles. All of these young stars can add good value for the club moving forward.

4. Mixed first impressions for Andrey Santos

The Premier League side Manchester United have been busy in the transfer market. They have already made three important signings. One of which is the £50 million summer signing from Chelsea, Andrey Santos. He started for the Red Devils in his usual defensive midfield role. The Brazilian star looked well aware of his role and somewhat played his part, but it was not quite enough. He still needs to step up his game.

5. Are Wrexham ready?

A 1-0 win against an English Premier League club is a big confidence booster for Wrexham AFC. They are going to play their first match of the season soon. There are still some things they must look out for. The Red Dragons were not quite able to stop Michael Carrick’s men’s attack. It was majorly the luck which helped them.

Against which team will Manchester United play their first game of the Premier League 2026-27 season?

They will go up against the newly promoted Hull City.

Who is the manager of Manchester United?

Michael Carrick.
