El Tri will look to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 40 years.
Mexico take on England in a standout Round of 16 fixture in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on July 5. While the Three Lions are the slight favourites to win tonight’s match, the co-hosts will give them a strong fight.
The Mexican national team have been flawless in the expanded 48-team edition in North America, winning all four of their games without conceding a single goal. El Tri opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over South Africa, despite going down to 10 men. They followed it up with wins over South Korea (1-0) and Czechia (3-0).
Javier Aguirre’s men then cruised past Ecuador 2-0 in their Round of 32 clash, with Julian Quinones scoring his third goal of the campaign. Against an England side facing several injuries in their defence, the co-hosts will back themselves to cause an upset and book a place in the last eight for the first time since 1986.

Thoughts on the lineup
With no fresh injuries to contend with, head coach Javier Aguirre will stick with his preferred starting lineup. Chivas goalkeeper Raul Rangel has been superb between the sticks and has kept four clean sheets. He retains his place in the playing XI.
Genoa’s Johan Vazquez will earn his 50th cap for El Tri tonight, and he has been paired in central defence with the experienced Cesar Montes. Jorge Sanchez and Jesus Gallardo start as full-backs.
17-year-old Gilberto Mora has been stealing the spotlight in the tournament and has become the second-youngest person to start in a World Cup knockout match (behind Pele). He is joined by the defensive-minded pair of Erik Lira and Luis Romo, who will look to break up the England attacks.
Raul Jimenez has rolled back the years at the top, scoring twice in the World Cup. He starts as the lone striker. Unlikely hero Julian Quinones starts on the left wing, with Roberto Alvarado starting on the right.
