Mexico and England are set to face each other tonight.
Mexico and England are set to meet in one of the standout fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.
The match will be played at Mexico City Stadium in Mexico City, one of the most iconic venues in international football and the only stadium to host matches at three different FIFA World Cups: 1970, 1986 and 2026.
Conditions in the Mexican capital are expected to play a significant role in proceedings, with altitude and weather emerging as two major talking points ahead of kickoff. England, in particular, have had limited time to adapt to the unique environment in Mexico City.
The surface at Mexico City Stadium is a FIFA-approved natural grass pitch that was upgraded ahead of the 2026 World Cup as part of the stadium’s renovation programme. The venue uses a hybrid grass system designed to maintain consistency and durability throughout the tournament.
The biggest factor, however, is the stadium’s elevation. Situated approximately 2,240 metres (7,220 feet) above sea level, Mexico City Stadium is the highest-altitude venue being used during the knockout stages of the tournament.
The thinner air at altitude generally causes the ball to travel faster and further, which can influence long passes, crosses, set-pieces and shots from distance. Teams are also required to manage energy levels carefully due to reduced oxygen availability compared to sea-level venues.
The pitch itself is expected to be in excellent condition despite forecasts of rain in the build-up to kickoff.

Weather Report

Forecasts for Mexico City suggest match temperatures between 18°C-21°C with average humidity levels expected throughout the duration, as well as a high likelihood of thunderstorm activity (80% chance of storms occurring) within the match’s scheduled start time window. Additionally, multiple forecasts indicate the possibility (80% probability) that thunderstorms will occur at some point during the match itself.
FIFA regulations allow for a match to be suspended due to lightning strikes occurring inside the defined safety zone (distance away from the playing field/area); games are rescheduled until it is safe to return to play after a delay period.
The weather already affected Mexico’s last knockout match at this venue and has raised concerns that continued precipitation could lead to further delays if the heaviness of the storm increases prior to kickoff.
