Newcastle United are set to face Liverpool in a feisty Matchday 1 fixture of the English Premier League 2026-27 season at St. James’ Park on Sunday, August 23, 2026. Both sides have undergone wholesale changes over the summer, but will seek a winning start to their league campaign.
The transfer window could not have gone any worse for Newcastle United, who lost a host of big names, including Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and influential captain Bruno Guimarães. To compound their misery, they lost head coach Eddie Howe, who was replaced by Matthias Jaissle.
Liverpool, too, replaced their head coach, with Andoni Iraola joining before the season. Players such as Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah departed on free transfers, with Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz, and others replacing them.” The Reds, however, have a paper-thin squad, which will be tested against the Magpies.
