The FIFA World Cup, widely regarded as the biggest sporting event in the world, has been graced by legendary footballers from all over the world. From prolific goalscorers to genius chance creators, the quadrennial tournament has been lit up by players of all kinds.
Some, like Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, have continued to dazzle in the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America. The Argentine skipper, despite being 39 years old, leads both the all-time goalscoring and assist charts in the tournament, while Mbappe has run him close in the Golden Boot race.
Both players have been key for their nations, both in terms of setting up goals for others as well as finding the back of the net themselves. Over the years, legends of yesteryear like Pele and Ronaldo Nazario have done the same for their nations.

Miroslav Klose (Germany) – 19 goal contributions
Polish-born Miroslav Klose remains one of the finest strikers to ever grace the World Cup. The former Bayern Munich player was the long-time holder of the all-time scoring record in the tournament before being dethroned by Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. Overall, he scored 16 goals and registered three assists in 24 matches.
Ronaldo Nazario (Brazil) – 19 goal contributions
One of the few players to win multiple World Cup titles, Ronaldo Nazario has netted 15 goals and registered four assists in just 19 matches in the tournament. Eight of those goals came in the 2002 edition, where he finished with the Golden Boot and helped the Selecao win their fifth World Cup title.
Pele (Brazil) – 21 goal contributions
For a long time, Pele’s record of 12 goals and nine assists was thought to be an untouchable milestone before Mbappe and Messi broke it. The Brazilian legend remains the only player in World Cup history to win the title three times, although he never managed to bag the Golden Boot award.
Kylian Mbappe (France) – 25 goal contributions

It is astonishing to remember that Kylian Mbappe is still just 27 years old. The French forward is just one goal behind Messi’s all-time record in the World Cup and has also managed five assists. He has also made it to the World Cup finals twice, winning it once, and can add a third-place finish to that tally in the 2026 edition.
Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 33 goal contributions

Messi’s totals of 21 goals and 12 assists are World Cup records in and of themselves. He can also become one of the few players to successfully retain the World Cup title. A maiden Golden Boot is also on the cards for the Inter Miami forward.
