United had a poor start to the new season and will be looking to put an end to their sub-par performance as they travel to Como to play their third Champions League match.

2. Willy Kambwala
Willy Kambwala has had an interesting career path. He joined United’s academy from Sochaux in 2020 and made his debut for the senior squad against West Ham United in December 2023. This opportunity came when he was still a teenager.
He made 10 professional outings in the 2023-24 season, eight in the Premier League, and was part of United’s FA Cup-winning team. He may only have been at United for a short while, but he did get to play for the first team and wasn’t merely kept in the academy.
Kambwala later joined Villarreal in the summer of 2024. In his debut season in Spain, he played 21 times in La Liga and the Copa del Rey, getting more experience after leaving Old Trafford. That season, Villarreal finished fifth in Spain’s LaLiga and secured a spot in next year’s Champions League.
Como decided to sign him on loan for the 2026-27 campaign, with the possibility of making the move permanent. When discussing the signing, Fàbregas spoke of his pace, physicality and ability to defend space. If Kambwala continues to make an impression, then Como may sign him permanently.

1. Raphaël Varane
Raphaël Varane joined Manchester United in 2021, following a decade at Real Madrid. He came with four Champions League crowns, three LaLiga titles and a 2018 World Cup winner’s medal, making him an exceptionally distinguished addition to United’s defence.
In three campaigns, he made 95 appearances at Old Trafford for United, winning the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. His last outing for United came in the Wembley triumph over Manchester City.
In July 2024, he signed a two-year contract with an option to extend with Como. Cesc Fàbregas was attracted by the experience Varane might provide to a squad finding its feet in Serie A.
The switch, however, only saw him make one competitive appearance. Varane declared his retirement on 25 September 2024 at the age of 31, following a serious knee injury in the Coppa Italia contest against Sampdoria.
“A new life begins off the pitch,” Varane said. “I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon.”
