Scott McTominay is set to undergo heart surgery after Napoli confirmed that the Scotland international has been diagnosed with a mild, benign cardiac arrhythmia. The Partenopei revealed the diagnosis in an official statement on Tuesday.
“Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days,” the statement read. “He will be available again after the international break.”
In welcome news for Napoli fans, McTominay’s condition is not considered serious, and the procedure is not expected to affect his football career. Cardiac ablation using PFA is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat abnormal heart rhythms.
As a result, the former Manchester United man is expected to be available again after the international break.

Before being officially diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia, McTominay featured in Napoli’s 2-1 home defeat to Como. Head coach Massimiliano Allegri revealed that the Scottish midfielder was suffering from blisters.
“McTominay had some problems with blisters, so he’s been training on a limited basis,” Allegri said. “Hopefully, we can get him into the best possible condition as soon as possible.”
Following his move from Manchester United, McTominay has established himself as one of the best players in Serie A. His performances in the 2024-25 season saw him voted the league’s MVP. He was also nominated for the Ballon d’Or. So far, he has scored 27 goals in 82 appearances.
He will now likely miss Napoli’s next four games before the international break. This includes an away match against Inter Milan, a UEFA Champions League home game against Arsenal, a home game against Bologna, and an away fixture against Fiorentina.
