The league has witnessed some of the most lethal spot-kick takers in the past.

Every team has a designated penalty kick taker who is usually the most clinical finisher in the squad. These players have incredible composure and are built to be calm in high-pressure situations. Many players of that calibre have featured in the Italian Serie A, which is one of the elite football leagues in Europe. While the competition is popular for producing some of the finest defenders over the years, it has also seen sensational attackers.  Here is a look at the top five players with most penalty goals in the history of Serie A:

5. Ciro Immobile - 44

Ciro Immobile is the only active player on the list. He has 44 penalty goals to his name. He will certainly move up the rankings in future. The Italian currently plays for Lazio in the Serie A. He has previously played for the likes of Juventus FC and Torino as well in the division.

The striker also holds the record for most penalty goals in a single season with 14 conversions. The 32-year-old is also the league’s golden boot winner on three occasions. Immobile will likely hope to breach the top three ranks in this list as he has a few years more to give at the top level.

4. Giuseppe Savoldi - 45

Giuseppe Savoldi is regarded as one of the most versatile forwards in the history of Italian football. His accuracy from the penalty spot was particularly famous. After all, the striker has 45 penalty goals in the league, which puts him in fourth place in terms of all-time leading penalty goalscorers in the Serie A.

Savoldi played for teams like Atalanta, Bologna and Napoli in his career. He scored over 168 goals in the competition. He won the golden boot once in the Seria A and thrice in the Italian domestic cup.

3. Alessandro del Piero - 50

Alessandro del Piero is one of the biggest names when it comes to Italian football. He is a legend of the sport and remains in the third spot with 50 penalty goals in the rankings. The Italian was a serial winner and scored in every competition, bagging multiple individual and team awards.

The now-retired striker played for Juventus FC for 19 years before moving on to foreign experiences in Australia and India. Out of the 188 total goals in the Serie A, 50 were from the penalty spot. He won the league six times with the Old Lady and was also a FIFA World Cup 2006 winner with Italy.

2. Roberto Baggio - 68

Roberto Baggio is also a legend when it comes to Italian football. Many regard him as the greatest the country has ever produced, which is a very strong and valid claim. The striker played for teams like Inter Milan, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Juventus among others.

The former Ballon d’Or winner scored 68 penalty goals, which is the second-highest tally in the Serie A. Despite his glorious career where he won multiple trophies, Baggio is remembered for missing the crucial penalty in the FIFA World Cup 1994 final that handed Brazil the title of world champions.

1. Francesco Totti - 71

Francesco Totti is the all-time leading player with the most penalty goals in the Serie A. He scored 71 goals from the spot across his long and illustrious career. His record may not get broken for several years, particularly because of the longevity of the midfielder’s playing time at AS Roma

The Italian is famous for being the face of loyalty in football, as he only represented AS Roma for 24 years. The 2006 World Cup winner also scored 250 goals in 618 matches in the Serie A, which makes him the second-highest scorer behind Silvio Piola.
