Spain's road to FIFA World Cup 2026 Final

Spain are set to play their second FIFA World Cup final.
Spain have reached the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026, and their journey has been smoother than that of their summit clash rivals Argentina. La Roja are set to play their second all-time final in the FIFA World Cup, with the first one coming in 2010.
The final of the summer competition will be played on July 19 at the New York New Jersey Stadium. Thus, before the final, let’s take a look at La Roja’s route to the ultimate clash on the grandest stage of world football.
Spain’s Route to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final
Group stage: Spain 0-0 vs Cape Verde
La Roja were expected to secure a one-sided win in their opening game in North America against World Cup debutants Cape Verde. However, thanks to a goalkeeping spectacle by Vozinha, who made seven saves, the 2010 champions had to settle for a goalless draw.
Group stage: Spain 4-0 Saudi Arabia

Lamine Yamal scored La Roja’s first goal of the tournament in his first start. In the 10th minute, the 19-year-old gave Spain a much-needed lead. Mikel Oyarzabal later completed a brace within four minutes in the first half. An own goal by Al Tambakti helped the 2010 champions secure a 4-0 triumph.

Group stage: Spain 1-0 Uruguay
Luis de la Fuente’s men eliminated Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay from the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a 1-0 defeat on the final matchday. Atletico Madrid’s Alex Baena scored his maiden World Cup goal to secure La Roja’s table-top finish in Group H with seven points in three games.
Round of 32: Spain 3-0 Austria
The round of 32 has been introduced in the latest edition of the World Cup. However, La Roja were certainly unbothered by the additional round. Mikel Oyarzabal scored his second brace of the summer competition while Pedro Porro netted his first World Cup goal in his second start.
Round of 16: Spain 1-0 Portugal

Facing arch-rivals Portugal, super sub Mikel Merino scored his only goal of the game in injury time. The Arsenal midfielder helped the 2010 champions avoid extra time, while Unai Simón created a World Cup record for most consecutive minutes without conceding a single goal, 609.
Quarterfinal: Spain 2-1 Belgium
Charles De Ketelaere became the first and only player so far in the tournament to have scored a goal against Luis de la Fuente’s side. However, much like the round of 16, Mikel Merino again used his tactical intelligence to find the winner in the dying minutes.
Semifinal: Spain 2-0 France

The game was expected to be La Roja’s biggest test in the tournament; however, France failed to challenge Spain’s tactical understanding. Mikel Oyarzabal broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute by converting a penalty won by Lamine Yamal. Meanwhile, Pedro Porro scored the second goal of the game, solidifying La Roja’s win over the two-time champions.
