Can Spain’s Golden Generation 2.0 repeat heroics of 2010 by winning World Cup as European champions

New York New Jersey Stadium in the United States of America gears up to host the World Cup Final fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where reigning Euro champions Spain and defending champions Argentina lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

La Roja under Luis De La Fuente are on the cusp of making history as they eye replicating the heroics of Spain’s golden generation, that went on to become the world champions in 2010 after winning the Euros in 2008. Spain went on to get the better of favourites France in the semi-finals with a 2-0 win.

Argentina has become synonymous with a comeback. Not a single Argentina game in the knockout ended without suspense as Lionel Scaloni’s men went on to get the better of debutants Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and 1966 champions England in dramatic fashion to reach back-to-back finals.

On football’s grandest stage, ninety minutes can transform great players into national heroes. This highly anticipated showdown promises a tactical war, but the outcome rests on the boots of a few special individuals. In this article, we shall take a look at the top five players to keep an eye on.

5. Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain)

The Eibar-born striker, who has been loyal to Real Sociedad since his early playing days, is the top scorer for Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026. He has scored five goals, and at a time when other offensive players like Lamine Yamal have failed to find the back of the net, Oyarzabal has been consistent.

He was part of the Spain team that won the UEFA Nations League and the Euros. Apart from scoring the penalty against Argentina, Oyarzabal scored two braces against Austria and Saudi Arabia and will be Spain’s go to man for scoring goals in the Finals.

4. Lautaro Martinez (Argentina)

The Inter Milan striker has time and again proved why he is regarded as one of the finest in the world. From scoring the third goal against Switzerland to scoring the winner against England in the semi-finals, Martinez has scored back-to-back knockout goals.

Lionel Scaloni has rotated Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez regularly to pair alongside Messi upfront. Whether he starts in the next game against Spain or comes off the bench, he is set to play a crucial role in the finals for Argentina.

3. Pedro Porro (Spain)

The Tottenham fullback was not expected to start for Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026. But after a sluggish display in the wings, De La Fuente started Porro in the right back, and the rest is history. Porro’s masterclass in the last game and the second goal won him the player of the match against France.

The Don Benito-born fullback is a hyper-athletic modern fullback who combines elite linear recovery speed with his devastating offensive creation capabilities from half-spaces. He has been the top performer for Spain so far in the World Cup and will be keen to go all guns blazing against Argentina.

2. Enzo Fernandes (Argentina)

Born in the north-central metropolitan canopy of Greater Buenos Aires, Enzo is a world-class midfielder who excels in transitional plays. The unshakeable emotional engine room governor for Lionel Scaloni, the Chelsea midfielder scored two knockout goals against England and Egypt.

Fernandes is a big game player who knows how to control the tempo and dictate the pace of the game from the centre of the field. He won the FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea, a year ago in this venue, and he would be keen to add the fourth star to Argentina’s badge.

1. Marc Cucurella (Spain)

The only Real Madrid player in the Spain team, who made a high-profile move from Stamford Bridge to Bernabeu recently, has been in sublime form for Luis De La Fuente’s team. Cucurella was a breakout star in Spain’s Euro 2024 campaign, where La Roja won the championship convincingly.

The undisputed defensive vanguard of Luis de la Fuente’s backline, Cucurella exhibited a defensive masterclass against a star-studded French squad and kept Ousmane Dembele quiet in the wings.
