La Roja march on to the last 16!

For their first knockout stage fixture, the Spain national football team locked horns with the Austria national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This interesting contest took place at the Los Angeles Stadium.

La Roja have finally broken their knockout stage curse. The Spaniards have never secured a win in a World Cup knockout match in normal time since they lifted the prestigious trophy back in 2010. They have turned the tide after easily securing a 2-0 win against Austria in their round of 32 clash.

Led by Luis de la Fuente, the Spain national football team have now locked in their spot for the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Ralf Rangnick’s men will return home after they failed to stand a chance against the European champions.

Five important things we learned from this match:

1. Spain’s control too much for Austria

Luis de la Fuente’s men fully controlled the tempo of the round of 32 clash from the start till the end. The Austria national football team were not quite impactful during both halves and are now heading home. They only came up with five attempts on goal and neither of them was on target. La Roja managed to find the net twice and are now marching on.

2. Mikel Oyarzabal continues to shine for La Roja

The 29-year-old played a major role in the final third for the Spain national football team. He opened the scoring for La Roja after firing the ball at the back of the net in the 36th minute and completed his brace in the final moments of the game. Mikel Oyarzabal helped Spain secure an easy win and has now scored four goals in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

3. Phenomenal Spanish defence

La Roja stood tall against the Ralf Rangnick-led side. Their defence becomes an important talking point here. They are the only other side, alongside Mexico, that have not yet conceded a goal in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Spain did not allow many chances to Austria. They defended well while maintaining calm and composure. It will continue to play a major role for them during the rest of the tournament.

4. Spirited run comes to an end for Austria

The Austria national football team did not have an easy group. They were placed in Group J alongside Argentina, Algeria and Jordan. Ralf Rangnick’s men only managed one win in the group stage and marched on to the round of 32. Against the Spaniards, they faced tough competition and their run at the FIFA World Cup 2026 came to an end. Das Team battled hard, but it was not quite enough.

5. Spain march confidently into the Round of 16

Game after game, the Luis de la Fuente-led side continues to prove that the favourites status to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup is not just a fluke. The Spain national football team haven’t conceded a single goal at the mega competition this year. They will get to face Portugal or Croatia, depending on which of these teams comes through. La Roja displayed a top performance against Austria and will be fully confident for their next fixture.
