Quan Gomes’ goal gave the Flaming Orange all three points.

Sporting Clube de Goa registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over Calangute Association in the Goa Professional League match played under floodlights at Duler Stadium earlier in the evening.

With today’s win, Sporting moved to the top with 14 points from six outings, while Calangute remained in the fifth position with 8 points from six matches.

Sporting were unbeaten in the league, however, they had dropped two important points against FC Bardez in the last match, while, Calangute were defeated by Salgaocar FC in their previous match to break their unbeaten run in the league.

Calangute had three changes to their side as Myron Fernandes made the first start of the season for the Beachside, while their coach Alex Alvares also brought back Omkar Satelkar and Josley Dias in the starting XI. On the other hand, Sporting gaffer Mateus Costa made the changes in wholesale as Nigerian striker Abiola Afuwape, George D’Souza and Cajetan Fernandes were back in the lineup. He also introduced Goalkeeper Melroy Fernandes and U-20 midfielder Myron Fernandes in the playing XI. The striker Victorino Fernandes who has almost scored in every match for the Flaming Orange surprisingly started from the bench.

Sporting started with a dominant play and took just three minutes to create their first chance when George sent a cross to find Quan Gomes in the box but Calangute keeper Jason D’Mello came off the line to push it for a corner. A few minutes later, their Marcus Mascarenhas brilliantly cut past Calangute defender Bersal Viegas but Calangute custodian once again came forward to rescue his side.

Keeper Jason was in action again when he once again surged ahead to keep his side safe when Sporting’s Nigerian striker Abiola snatched the ball from defender Mayur Shelar and was in the commanding position to score from inside the box but Jason made no mistake to collect it before the striker could do any damage.

At the other end, Calangute’s Myron came twice close to put his side ahead but first his curling shot was divingly pushed for safety by Sporting shot-stopper Melroy, while in the last few minutes of the first half, the striker saw his chip shot from outside the box missed the target by a whisker.

It was just four minutes in the second session when Sporting opened the account through Quan as striker made no mistake to tap the ball home after Nigerian striker Abiola failed to connect Marcus’ cross from left flank making it 1-0 for the Flaming Orange.

A very next minute saw Calangute going all attacking as Joston Pereira nicely curled the ball inside the box but Sporting keeper Melroy intercepted the cross as the ball landed in Josley’s feet who blasted it from inside only to see it denied by the woodwork.

Whereas Sporting should have doubled the lead in the 54th minutes when their defender Sodiq ender Sodiq Ibrahim got hold of the loose ball in the goalmouth but the defender shot wide from point-blank range.

The dying minutes of the match witnessed Sporting wasting two more chance. First, Marcus made a smart cross to Quan in the box who cut back it to substitute Victorino in front of the goal but the forward tap wide with just keeper to beat. Later, Quan came with a fine cross to Marcus in the box with just keeper at the stake but the latter shot wide.
