The shot-stoppoer was typically frank in his assessment of the country's football scene.

Picking sides and pointing fingers, Indian Super League (ISL) defending champions ATK’s goalkeeper Debjit Majumder finally opened up as he talked about how the PLAYERS in the country want to play in the best available league. The former Mohun Bagan goalkeeper also poured some insight into his opinion as he dubbed the ISL the “top” league in the country.

“Everybody wants to play in the top league and the ISL is the top league,” said Majumder to the reporters at a press conference in Kolkata on Friday. The custodian also went on to explain how the influx of well-established players from different corners of the world had helped him choose his future with ATK, “I wanted to play with top players like Robbie Keane and Jordi,” he added.

Speaking about the positive of the ISL the shot-stopper mentioned how the infrastructure is superior to that of the I-League. The 29-year-old also revealed that impressive recruitment by his employers has led to an amazing atmosphere in the dressing room which rhas seen the team reap the benefits.

“The infrastructure is better here. I got a goalkeeping coach like Jussi. The I-League has good players too but I wanted to share the dressing room with these players,” Majumder said.

With a rather vitriolic end to the partnership between Spanish giants Atletico De Madrid and ATK earlier this year, which was followed by an English DNA inside the franchise, many assumed the defending champions would sport a massively changed gameplay. Talking about the changes this season, Majumder clarified, “We have improved our understanding and spoke to each other a lot. The style may be a bit different but football is the same. The first few matches maybe tough, but as we go along it would be easier,” he affirmed.

The longtime Bagan keeper, who played for the Kolkata giants earlier this year in the last season of the I-League was asked if he would miss donning the Green and Maroon jersey of the Mariners, a question he handled most diplomatically. “Now, I am an ATK player and I am thinking about ATK. I wish them luck for the I-League but I'm focused on Sunday’s match.”

Majumder also went on to talk about the huge fanbase of his former side and whether his current team would wield such fan power in the stands this season. “Maybe ATK does not have same support base as Mohun Bagan as it’s a new team. But, those who love football will come to the ground,” he ended.
